Legislative and Political Program Coordinator

Based in the Lansing area, MI

The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is the largest, most effective union for RNs across the state. As the voice for all registered nurses in Michigan, MNA advocates for nurses and their patients at the Capitol, in the community, and at the bargaining table.

The Legislative and Political Program Coordinator is responsible for contributing to MNA’s legislative goals and building political power.

This position requires both formal and informal advocacy with and on behalf of MNA members and all registered nurses, working in collaboration with the Government Affairs Director under the direction of the Associate Executive Director for Communications and Public Affairs. Extensive outreach to members and periodic travel within the state are required.

Duties
Grow the MNA Political Action Committee and Political Power – Drive donations to the MNA PAC, administer the fund and turn out members for activities such as walks and call banks for candidates. Work with the MNA-PAC Board to build a broad, sustainable funding stream. With input and guidance from the Government Affairs Director, staff the MNA-PAC Board meetings and conference calls. Assist with MNA’s endorsement process and screenings.

Member Outreach and Mobilization – Connect MNA legislative and political priorities with new member organizing and contract negotiations wherever possible. This position requires extensive contact and one-on-one educational and organizing conversations with MNA members and potential members. Support member training and turnout for MNA PAC, advocacy, and education events.

Maintain Legislative and Political Contacts – In coordination with the Government Affairs Director, confer with elected officials and staffers to support MNA’s positions. Conduct outreach to legislators/candidates and staff in regard to MNA events, screenings and coalition participation.

Legislative Analysis – Monitor legislation and regulations and produce related materials for the purpose of evaluating nurses’ interests, supporting MNA lobbying efforts and keeping members informed.
Plan and Execute Field Campaigns – Work with local bargaining units to build capacity and execute field campaigns for targeted elections, political accountability and ballot initiatives. Plan and drive volunteer turnout for events such as walks and phone banks.

Reporting – Follow tracking and reporting mechanisms for the duties assigned above. Ensure PAC contributions are properly collected and accurately recorded. Review the necessary MNA-PAC Campaign Finance Reports before they are filed with the state.

Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in political science or related field
  • At least two years’ experience in a legislative support, advocacy or political mobilization role
  • Proven success in fundraising
  • A commitment to the goals and values of the labor movement
