Cannabis Division Lead Organizer

Background
UFCW 770 stands 31,000 members strong, representing and advocating for workers in healthcare, retail health, grocery, packing and cannabis. For nearly a decade, UFCW 770 has organized hundreds of workers in the cannabis industry, starting in the largest cannabis market in the country – Los Angeles. Since the passage of Proposition 64 in 2016, UFCW 770 is on the forefront of organizing cannabis workers throughout Southern CA – from as far south as Harbor City to as far north as San Luis Obispo.

Job Responsibilities

  • Identify, recruit, train and develop worker-leaders through one-on-one communication.
  • Train workers to organize their coworkers.
  • Build and maintain worker committees.
  • Organize and lead worker committee meetings.
  • Develop worker leadership and structure of campaigns/planning.
  • Oversee the conduct of organizing drives, card check agreements, and representation.
  • Understand nuances and issues specific to cannabis workers, both within the workplace and at a legislative level.
  • Assist and participate in collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
  • Execute Labor Peace Agreements in the field.
  • Understand local, state, and federal cannabis laws.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team in both internal and external organizing drives.

Job Requirements/Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Excellent written & oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in both internal and external organizing.
  • Experience as an organizer and/or union representative preferred, especially organizing low-wage workers of color.
  • Willing to work long, irregular hours (including weekends), as needed.
  • Willing and able to travel as needed.
  • Commitment to rank and file leadership development.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work with a diverse, multi-cultural membership.
  • Must have a car and a driver’s license. Please indicate in your application whether you have these.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in negotiations.
  • Ability to speak Spanish.
