Based in Silver Spring, MD

The Amalgamated Transit Union has an opening for an Accounting Assistant to begin immediately. The ATU is the largest union representing transit workers in the United States and Canada.

The incumbent of this position assists the Controller and the Asst. Controller. The duties include reconciling U.S. and Canadian bank accounts, investments and pension funds; entering general journal entries, entering and posting daily bank transactions, coding time reports, creating financial reports, processing the wireless phone bills and Credit Card bills.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Reconcile bank accounts
• Record investment activity for general fund and pension fund portfolios
• Reconcile to statements and general ledger
• Entering recurring journal entries
• Enter and post daily bank transactions
• Code and enter weekly time reports
• Review and process air fare charges
• Review and process wireless phone charges
• Assists in the registry department on an “as needed” basis
• Record Jerry Fund and Disaster Relief Fund receipts and disbursements
• Other duties as assigned

SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Computer spreadsheet skills
• Strong knowledge of debits/credits and basic accounting
• Strong reconciliation skills
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to pay attention to detail
• Ability to make routine decisions
• Ability to converse with vendors

Location:
The Accounting Assistant will work out of the ATU’s headquarters office at 10000 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.

Compensation:
Starting salary will be $62,007.87. ATU provides medical, dental, vision and life insurance with no employee premiums; a defined-benefit pension plan with no employee contributions; a 401(k) savings plan; and paid vacation and sick leave.
