The Community Organizer position:
The Community Organizer works with the Education and Community Organizing team in a rigorous, campaign style, nonviolence leadership effort. This position utilizes a coaching approach to relationships, personal transformation and social justice. Team members organize diverse school personnel, elected officials, educators and administrators, labor, community organizations, adults, elders and youth.

The Community Organizer’s responsibilities include cultivating relationships and advancing policy initiatives with education administrators, labor, legislators, civic and community leaders, elders and civil rights leaders, families, and students. Ethical leadership coaching provides a framework for self-change. Responsibilities focus on management of community organizing outreach, legislative and policy work, civic engagement projects, administrator and educator relations, phone calling, organizing and staffing events, home visits and school visits. Team members also participate in community and public events together with students, parents/grandparents, and volunteers.

This position’s civic engagement focus is the South Puget Sound Region – specifically South King County and Tacoma/Pierce.

Requirements:

  • Two (2) years of experience working for in union organizing or campaign work, with elected officials, or similar environment
  • Live within South King County or Tacoma (not Seattle or South Pierce).
  • A driver’s license, a car, automobile insurance on that vehicle, and a smart phone.
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including within the state and to other states, including overnight travel. Travel expenses covered.
  • Proficient analytical skills necessary to interpret and develop relationships
  • Ability to advocate for the organization’s interests and those of its constituents
  • Experience working with people from cultures and backgrounds other than one’s own Intercultural and intergenerational proficiency
  • Desire and capacity for self-change and personal transformation. Lack of defensiveness.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds
  • Personal commitment to justice for working people.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in positions with the following types of employers is highly valued: labor unions, elected officials, political campaigns, progressive issue advocacy organizations, social justice organizations, community and social service organizations. Previous experience as a legislative aid, labor representative, shop steward, or similar position.
  • Bilingual or multilingual is an asset
  • Creativity, outgoingness and Strong self-initiative

Salary:
$43,000 to $46,000 per year with full medical and dental benefits after 3 months and pension after one year
