Youth Organizer and Operations Assistant

Job Description
Organizational Description: Founded in 1972, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) is a grassroots membership-based organization that empowers the Chinese community in San Francisco and promotes justice and equality for all people. CPA’s campaigns and programs improve the living and working conditions of working class immigrants and give ordinary community members a stronger voice in the decision making processes that affect them. Our core strategies are organizing, leadership development and alliance building.

Position Overview
The Youth Organizer is responsible for 1) supporting the design, development, and implementation of CPA’s youth organizing programs, campaigns and membership building, and 2) conducting administrative responsibilities to support organizational function. The position reports to the Youth Team Lead Organizer and requires extensive collaboration with other CPA staff, youth leaders, and allies.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
Campaigns (15%)

  • Support youth campaign (OHIOH) implementation at the site level
  • Build and maintain student engagement, ownership and development in campaign work.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local alliances, coalitions, key power players and allies
  • Support youth participation in civic engagement and electoral work, organization-wide campaigns, and external actions and mobilizations

Base-Building and Leadership Development (35%)

  • Implement Youth MOJO program to build and retain active youth membership and development.
  • Lead the political education of Youth MOJO members, including developing and facilitating curriculum
  • Lead basebuilding tactics to recruit and retain youth leaders through building relationships and mentorship
  • Build leadership and political development on gender and sexuality topics, and help develop gender/queer justice lens for CPA as an organization
  • Lead Common Roots, a joint youth organizing and leadership development program with PODER. Create opportunities for youth to develop cross-cultural solidarity and develop critical analysis around economic and environmental issues.
  • Coordinate youth exchanges and training activities
  • Maintain regular communication with members through email and social media
  • Regularly document activities and maintain a database of members and alumni
  • Regularly provide documentation of program work for contracts reporting

Operations (40%)

  • Support reception and office maintenance duties
  • Support employee onboarding
  • Filing and processing of forms
  • Lead and coordinate key administrative projects
  • Provide support to the Operations Team with operations-related tasks and administrative needs

Organizational Responsibilities (10%)

  • Support and participate in CPA campaigns, programs, and organization-wide activities as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications

  • A commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, bottom-up social change and building social movements
  • Familiar with youth leadership development and community organizing
  • Ability to support and connect with high school youth
  • Curriculum development and facilitation experience
  • Strong emotional intelligence skills (esp in conflict mediation, accountability and communication)
  • Ability to problem solve and initiate solutions
  • Excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and project management skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills with expertise in G-Suite and Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of Chinese American and/or Asian American youth experiences
  • Experience provide programming for queer and questioning youth
  • Experience designing and implementing program
  • Experience with youth organizing
  • Experience in campaign organizing
  • Electoral experience
  • Graphic design and layout experience
  • Bilingual in English and Cantonese and/or Mandarin
  • Literacy in Chinese
  • Employment Terms: Full-time, non-exempt.
  • Salary and Benefits: Expected annual salary earnings $45,000-$52,000. This position also comes with medical and dental benefits, plus paid vacation, sick time and holidays.
