Manager of Strategic Research & Education

Based in Washington, DC

The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) is seeking a Research and Education Specialist to work at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. BAC, the oldest trade union in North America, is dedicated to improving the lives of masonry craftworkers engaged in all aspects of construction, and the communities they live in.

Job Summary
This position will help build the capacity of BAC local unions through strategic research, campaign implementation, and development of education and training curricula for local union leaders and rank and file union members. To be successful, the Manager of Strategic Research & Education must develop good working relationships with International Union (IU) and Local Union leaders and provide advice, guidance, and training to those leaders as well as the staff who support them. This individual will work closely with the Communications and Organizing departments to develop and move campaigns to promote economic justice for our members. This position serves in the Office of the President and is a critical team member along with other headquarters’ staff and IU representatives across the US and Canada.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, coordinate and conduct strategic research to support organizing, industry, and social campaigns, including data collection, analysis, and report writing;
  • Train and mentor IU staff and local union staff on research and campaign development and implementation;
  • Track market and industry trends and economic indicators, regionally and nationally;
  • Incorporate research into overall campaign planning, including worker, community and strategic elements.
  • Work independently and with subject matter experts, IU reps and staff in other departments to develop content for training programs and related materials.
  • Develop course content using various multimedia tools.
  • Track and monitor industry developments and programs in consultation with the International Masonry Institute and other industry partners;
  • Coordinate with AFL-CIO, NABTU, CPWR and other labor movement partners and community allies as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for, and commitment to, fighting for workers’ rights;
  • Excellent strategic planning, creative problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Ability both to take direction and to work independently, taking initiative within areas of responsibility;
  • Strong analytical, computer and organization skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of audiences, both orally and in writing;
  • Expertise with database and research tools as well as facility with word processing and presentation software;
  • Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines;
  • Bachelor’s degree required plus 5 years or more of campaign experience, including supervising other campaign staff or organizers;
  • Willingness to travel, including overnight stays, on occasion;
