The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for an Executive Director of the New Conversations Project: Towards Sustainable Labor Practices in Global Supply Chains – Senior Extension Associate in the Extension/Outreach Division.
The Executive Director is responsible for developing, administering and delivering programs and services that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and for monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting and research activities of the program. The Executive Director position will be affiliated with the ILR Schools’ Scheinman Institute for Conflict Resolution (https://www.ilr.cornell.edu/scheinman-institute), the nation’s leading center for the study of workplace conflict resolution, engaging in a broad range of research, teaching, and outreach activities.
Senior Extension Associate is a non-tenure track, academic term position with up to a five-year initial appointment. The position may be reappointed on the basis of recommendations by the Director, Associate Dean of Outreach and the Dean, as well as available funding and work.
Project Related Emphasis: The Executive Director will be responsible for obtaining grants and contracts, outreach and fee-based consulting services to the private regulation eco-system, the development of training programs on labor practices in global supply chains, disseminating new research on private regulation with respect to labor practices, and occasional teaching at the ILR School. The position will report to the Director of the New Conversations Project, and can be based either in Ithaca or New York City.

- Advanced degree (Master’s, doctoral, or law degree) in related subject matter disciplines – industrial and labor relations, employment, labor law, management, economics, sociology, political science, and management/business, and related disciplines.
- Fifteen years of relevant experience in the general field of international labor rights and standards.
- At least five years of experience working with organizations in the eco-system of private regulation, including the ILO, or major multi-stakeholder organizations such as the Fair Labor Association, Fairwear Foundation, Ethical Trading Initiative, or national and international labor unions.
- At least five years of experience in senior leadership positions at organizations in the private regulation eco-system.
- Demonstrated ability in writing grant proposals and project proposals for funding from Foundations, Corporations, Governments, and international organizations.
- Demonstrable evidence of successful efforts to obtain funding through grants and contracts.
- Demonstrated ability to write position papers, project reports, terms of reference, and drafting consulting agreements.
- Experience with Distance Learning Technologies.
- Labor organizing experience.
- Prior teaching experience.
- Ability to speak at least one of the languages of countries at the center of global garment production, other than English.
- Experience at Running Campaigns (of any kind) would be an added benefit.
