Communications Specialist/Writer

Based in Silver Spring, MD

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) seeks a Communications Specialist/Writer to join our Communications department dedicated to strengthening ATU’s visibility among its membership, allies, the labor movement and the general public. The position will report to the Communications Director.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Developing, writing, editing, managing, and proofreading editorial content and stories for ATU’s award-winning quarterly magazine, In Transit.
  • Creating high-impact communications materials for members and external audiences for International and Local campaigns and programs, including leaflets, fact sheets, white papers, press releases, talking points, brochures, etc.
  • Writing and editing news and communications materials, including e-newsletters, op-eds, columns, news releases, website content, social media content and other materials for news media and/or public dissemination.
  • Assisting in the strategic development and implementation of ATU’s digital strategy through social media, mass email, text messaging, online advertising and online activism.
  • Counseling Locals on communications and social media strategies and execution.
  • Conducting media outreach for the International and Locals to increase ATU visibility in the news.
  • Supporting other Communications department programs as needed.

Skills:

  • At least five to seven years of experience in communications and writing for advocacy campaigns or other organizations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated confidence in writing abilities, and strong proofreading and editing skills.
  • Experience in strategic communications planning and implementation.
  • Experience with list-building on various digital and social media platforms, online advertising techniques, and web content management.
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to the needs and concerns of working people and diverse communities, and social and economic justice.
  • Familiarity with labor unions and campaign communications and organizing a plus.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and also to work independently, with the self-motivation to produce excellent work on time.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and Microsoft Office.

Location:
The position will work out of the ATU’s headquarters office at 10000 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.
