Political & Organizing Director

Political

  1. Provide direction and support to affiliates, Central Labor Councils (CLC), and community partners to create and execute strategic campaigns around issues, candidates, and organizing efforts that support working families.
  2. Provide direction and oversight for temporary and loaned field staff, direct assignments and serve as a resource for CLC and affiliate field staff. On-board, manage and develop release staff, including training on field skills through a leadership ladder.
  3. Create yearly political plan.
  4. Coordinate grassroots efforts to support political and policy advocacy work.
  5. Develop labor candidate recruitment strategies and trainings to build a farm-team for a wide range of future elected positions.
  6. Responsible for working with the Executive Secretary in drafting and implementing plans and budgets for Wyoming State AFL-CIO political program and strategic campaigns. Work with Executive Secretary to draft, implement and direct Wyoming State AFL-CIO’s strategic political plan to determine target campaigns and races each election cycle.
  7. Support affiliates in navigating campaign finance and provide resources to establish appropriate political funding mechanisms.
  8. Manage COPE fund and candidate contributions, enhancing fundraising strategies, and strengthen COPE participation.
  9. Serve as the Executive Director’s liaison and representative, as requested, at CLC, affiliate and community meetings and discussions.
  10. Manage all electoral data for the Wyoming State AFL-CIO and coordinate with local CLCs and affiliates, and coordinate a master calendar of events for electoral and legislative engagement opportunities including:
    • Maintain and strengthen activist database with CLCs and affiliates for political action
    • Serve as lead staff responsible for managing centralized data from LAN, developing targeted universes, cut doorbelling turf, manage phone banks, and draft corresponding scripts.
  11. Monitor and track candidate filings with the Wyoming Secretary of State, draft and certify ballot measures, and advise the Executive Secretary on where financial contributions are most needed.
  12. Participate in affiliate and CLC local initiative and ordinance campaign discussions, and assist as requested with local strategies to protect and improve working family policies.
  13. Co-Chair and manage the Political and Legislative Committee.
  14. Serve as lead political staff during election cycles.
  15. Work with the approved vendors on developing mailing materials and literature for target campaigns.
  16. Engage with local affiliates, CLCs, and community partners in GOTV events and field strategies.
  17. Participate in discussions and coalitions to create greater union/community engagement, especially in non-legislative activities and campaigns.
  18. Engage in issue work both electorally and state-wide.
  19. Help identify strategic campaign targets for new organizing and assist with executing campaign strategy in accordance with the affiliate’s needs.
  20. Duties include assisting affiliates in developing strategic campaign targets, conducting basic industry and employer research, consulting affiliates on campaign planning and strategy, identifying, recruiting, and developing workplace leaders, conducting one-on-one conversations through home visits and meetings to identify workers interested in forming a union, mapping workplaces and tracking overall support, and facilitating worker organizing committee meetings.
  21. Conduct multi-union Volunteer Member Organizer (VMO) trainings that both train union members for future organizing drives and assist a union with a weekend blitz.
  22. Campaign and Corporate Research – Conduct campaign research on organizing targets
  23. Track and Coordinate organizing leads.
  24. Develop and maintain a database of union members who hold elected office (boards, commissions, local or state government) that could influence organizing or contract negotiations.
  25. Identify available resources available for affiliate unions to use for major organizing campaigns like: Office space, phone lines or unions with VMOs and staff organizers who can be turned out for campaign blitzes.
  26. Coordinate and maintain relationships with staff organizers at affiliate unions who can provide mentorship and training opportunities for new staff and member shadow opportunities and ongoing training for new organizers at other unions.
  27. Represent the Wyoming State AFL-CIO in speaking roles before various groups of members, potential members, community organizations and issue/advocacy groups.
  28. Maintain organizing lists which may include input on or operation of computerized database systems.
  29. Establish goals and meet objectives in the implementation of an organizing program.
  30. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Organizing

Competitive pay, health and welfare insurance, and paid retirement are included with this position. In state travel is required, with occasional travel for out-of-state meetings. Successful applicants will need access to a vehicle.
