Communications Director

The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) is seeking a talented communications professional to lead a small but dynamic communications and education staff. BAC, the oldest trade union in North America, is dedicated to improving the lives of masonry craftworkers engaged in all aspects of construction, and the communities they live in.
Job Summary
The Director is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive plan for internal and external communications of the Union’s strategic goals and initiatives, including traditional and digital communications and branding. This position is responsible for management of the communications team. The Director also coordinates education and training programs for members, local union leaders and staff in conjunction with other BAC departments. This position reports to the Office of the President.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Formulation and implementation of a communications strategy. Creation and distribution of content with the goal of increasing engagement with stakeholders while consistently and accurately representing the organization’s values and objectives;
- Engagement and broad immersion with the goals, priorities, and activities of BAC to contribute meaningfully to policy development, and effective communication of the same; Write, edit and manage communications content across a range of platforms.
- Develop communication channels that create awareness and momentum, as well as test the effectiveness of communication activities;
- Oversee and edit membership Journal, newsletters and online communications from BAC’s leadership;
- Ensure all digital channels (website, blogs, emails and social media) deliver brand consistency, elevate the brand and analyze and report metrics to measure social media reach;
- Manage in-person communications support for Officers at key events and appearances;
- Interface with the highest level organizational and outside contacts, including media contacts;
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in communications, public relations or journalism in political or nonprofit environment;
- Excellent leadership, judgement, strategic planning, creative problem solving and analytical skills;
- Ability both to take direction and to work independently, taking initiative within areas of responsibility;
- Excellent team management skills, coaching ability and a track record of interdepartmental collaboration;
- Proven and highly effective written and oral communications skills;
- Strong editorial capabilities, including clear, concise writing skills and the ability to line edit with detailed accuracy;
- Solid organizational skills and the ability to assess priorities and manage multiple assignments with varied deadlines;
- On the record press experience, and ability to interact with external partners and to represent the organization to the public;
- Experience with digital channel programs and strategies inclusive of new and emerging technologies that support content/message delivery and measurement;
- Knowledge of unions or other advocacy organizations as well as political and cultural current affairs;
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field; Master’s degree preferred;
- Limited travel, including overnight stays, is required;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with staff at all levels.
