SEIU Local 49 is a growing union representing over 15,000 workers and is based in Portland, Oregon. The Local represents and organizes janitors, security officers, and healthcare workers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. We are committed to helping workers fight for social and economic justice on the job and in the community.

Purpose: The Strategic Researcher will provide research support for SEIU Local 49’s campaigns to build power and improve standards for workers. Campaigns can include bargaining and contract fights, external organizing campaigns, issue fights, and public policy campaigns. Researchers investigate the relevant industry, companies and worker and consumer concerns; and, develop and help implement public, educational, legal, legislative, and regulatory strategies. This position reports to the Research Director.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Gathers information through desk research as well as field research, both qualitative and quantitative – including site visits, interviews, attending public meetings and industry events, and more.
  • Analyzes local, state and federal policies related to healthcare and other industries.
  • Helps develop and implement public, legal, legislative and regulatory strategies.
  • Tracks industry trends.
  • Synthesizes relevant facts/issues from a large amount of information/data.
  • Prepares written summaries of analysis for internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrates the capability to learn and develop new skills.
  • Develops and implements a weekly work plan; meets deadlines.
  • Actively participates in other union activities including political organizing (that may include canvassing/walking neighborhoods) and solidarity actions.
  • Working long and irregular hours, that may include nights and weekends.
  • Performs other duties as required to support SEIU and its mission.

Job Qualifications & Requirements

  • Strong commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Bachelor’s degree with course work in economics, finance, statistics, labor relations, business or a related field, and two years of experience in research with demonstrated ability in quantitative or qualitative research (as a student is accepted).
  • Successful completion of the required research test.
  • Knowledge of research techniques and processes including interest in and experience with data analysis.
    • The ability, or ability to learn, to conduct deep analyses of healthcare and other industry employers and finances and business models is essential to the role.
    • The ability and/or interest to learn how to analyze health and retirement benefit plans.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers, including proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, database programs, and on-line research services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in collaborative team environment.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours if needed.
  • Knowledge of or experience in the healthcare industry preferred but not required.

Compensation: Salary ranges from $51,901.72 to $90,055.16 depending on experience, fully paid family healthcare, vacation and sick leave, retirement plans and other benefits.
