The Organization
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 Keystone State is a growing organization with 35,000 current members throughout Pennsylvania and parts of New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and West Virginia. UFCW 1776 Keystone State seeks a Communications Specialist to assist the organization in fulfilling their mission to organize the unorganized, protect workers and their benefits and advance the economic, social and class interests of the membership.

The Position
UFCW 1776KS seeks an individual to help lead the union’s political, legislative and community engagement programs in Western Pennsylvania. The prospective employee would be responsible for maintaining the Local’s political and legislatives presence in Western PA by assisting with lobbying visits of Western PA lawmakers, coordinating the Local’s political programs in election cycles, developing messaging and strategy to engage Local 1776KS members in the union’s political and legislative priorities, and assisting the Local’s political and legislative director with various responsibilities. The prospective employee will also be the lead representative for the union’s local government and community engagement programs, helping lead new strategies to engage our members and community allies to direct legislative and political programs designed to benefit the members of UFCW 1776KS.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in a political, legislative advocacy and/or community organizing setting.
  • Highly organized work practices, initiating and following through on assignments and ability to work under pressure.
  • Work with the political and legislative director to develop and implement political and advocacy strategies and campaigns.
  • Support and at times lead the union’s work on issue campaigns at the local, state, and federal level, including coordinating member engagement, political action committee organizing, legislative campaigns and coalition work.
  • Lead the union’s work in Western PA on election campaigns, specifically UFCW 1776KS member to member political education programs.
  • At times, assist the legislative director in Harrisburg during session days during legislative campaigns and lobbying visits.
  • Coordinate the union’s outreach and lobbying strategies to elected officials in Western PA during legislative campaigns.
  • Be the primary point of contact for all elected officials and candidates in Western PA (legislative questions, campaign inquiries, etc).
  • Coordinating political messaging and engagement strategies with the union’s legislative and communications team.
  • Serve as the lead representative for coalition and community engagement work that benefits the members of UFCW 1776KS in Western PA.
