New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice (NOWCRJ) seeks a Development Director who will serve as chief architect of a comprehensive development strategy to include individual giving and major donor programs, foundation grants, and fundraising events. We seek a highly skilled development professional to not only lead NOWCRJ in planning and implementation of fundraising strategy, but also lead in implementation and management of the operational infrastructure required for a successful development program. An activist orientation and commitment to social justice and innovation are essential.
The New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice (NOWCRJ) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to building the power and participation of poor people in order to expand democracy and transform the economy of Louisiana. We organize directly affected people, and couple their courage with strategic legal, policy, and communications initiatives to build campaigns that advance racial justice, immigrant rights, the rights of poor people, and a fair economy. NOWCRJ anchors three grassroots membership organizations (units) – the Congress of Day Laborers, Stand with Dignity, and the Seafood Workers Alliance – providing supports that aid in building grassroots power. The Development Director will work with the office of the Executive Director, the Board of Directors and staff to develop and implement annual development plans to support administrative operations and activities across all units.
- Develop and manage annual fundraising campaigns, establishing goals, objectives, activities, timelines and tracking progress to achievement
- Lead conversations with the executive team and Board of Directors to devise, implement, and evaluate fundraising strategy for the organization
- Develop a five-year fundraising plan that meets broad goals, including raising 20% of NOWCRJ’s budget through donor development, and completing a capital campaign to build a NOWCRJ site
- Manage the individual fundraising commitments of the Board of Directors
- Work with staff to develop and implement strategy around marketing and communications for fundraising
- Identify, develop, and mentor a development team, to include Board representation
- Develop organizational revenue projections as part of the budgeting process
- Participate in organizational strategy as a member of the leadership team
- Help build a development department, and manage staff as revenue growth allows for their hire
- Oversee the organization’s’ funding stream from foundations, including researching grant opportunities, writing and submitting applications, and managing reporting requirements
- Oversee research of funding trends, with foresight, to help position NOWCRJ ahead of major funding changes or trends
- Develop and execute all proposals, writing and editing compelling narratives for on-time submission
- Implement a long-term relationship-management approach with current and prospective funders
- Produce timely, compelling and accurate grant reports, coordinating with Administrator and other staff to ensure accuracy
Events and Annual Giving Vehicles (15%)
- Develop and oversee implementation of special events and fundraising activities
- Explore and, with consent of leadership and engagement of development team, implement promising annual giving and social entrepreneurship vehicles to raise revenue for the organization, from online appeals to house party fundraisers
- Develop and execute a plan for securing sponsors for fundraising events that includes staff and Board
Individual Donor Relationship Management 15 %
- Manage a portfolio of funding relationships, focused on cultivating and soliciting individual donors at $1,000 and above
- Screen and qualify current donors for higher level giving
- Conduct research to facilitate solicitation of larger gifts from a variety of sources, including individuals, private/family foundations
- Prospect and develop donors, working with members of Senior Staff and Board to leverage their resources and networks to identify prospective donors
- Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for each prospect, and coordinate implementation of these strategies
- Help inventory and assign key funding and donor relationships to Executive Director and other identified relationship managers within the organization
- Set multiple appointments each month to conduct electronic and face-to-face meetings to solicit and cultivate existing, new and prospective donors
- Scope new possibilities, building relationships with prospective donors, experts and activists in the field, peer donors, and others to advance individual giving and major donor programs
- Ensure management of relationships with multiple donor sources, developing and implementing a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
- Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
Special Projects (10%)
- Coordinate the planning and strategy process around potential new revenue opportunities, such as a capital campaign or social enterprise.
Systems – Data/Info Management (10%)
- Develop and help maintain effective fundraising systems for the organization, including grants calendar, grants archive, grant and individual donor prospect lists, moves management system, gift recognition system, and others as needed
- Lead training, implementation, and maintenance of an organizational fundraising database (we use EveryAction)
- Monitor campaign progress and account information to create related and useful data and reports; track, update, analyze, and evaluate data
- Work closely with Finance Administrator to develop revenue projections and track throughout the year
- Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.
Other Responsibilities (5%)
- Serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team working on organizational strategy and planning
- Integrate annual campaign revenue goals and strategies into work plans, projects, and initiatives
- Work with other staff to create publications to support fundraising activities.
- 4 or more years of experience and successful track record in professional non-profit fund development
- Experience with all aspects of fundraising
- A track record of testing, innovation and delivery of new fundraising models.
- Experience implementing and managing the operational infrastructure required for a successful development program, including donor database and other database systems, spreadsheets
- Strong metrics and operations orientation, including proven skills in finance [funds, portfolio] management
- Track record of timely and accurate reporting of fundraising performance and funds use against agreed internal and external targets
- An understanding of boards and foundation budgets
- Significant experience with grant writing and reporting
- Ability to communicate in writing in a clear, professional, and compelling fashion
- Presence and high comfort level in interactions with leaders in philanthropy, and potential donors
- Experience in donor research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
- Successful experience with donor recruitment and retention
- Ability to communicate verbally in a clear, professional, and compelling fashion
- Ability to meet with current or prospective donors and cultivate relationships
- Proven success in asking for and closing gifts and building and maintaining relationships with donors
- Ability to manage multiple and highly complex client and prospect relationships
- Successful experience with event planning, organizing, and implementation to raise funds
- Demonstrated passion for social justice, and ability to connect to potential funders through a justice framework
- Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a deep commitment to advancing these values
- A passion for our work, and enthusiasm for representing a dynamic organization
- Strong commitment to strengthening and increasing awareness within the organization of fundraising as a form of activism and education
- Capacity and commitment to work closely across administrative units, organizing units and teams to develop and execute communications, marketing, or public relations strategies to support resource development.
- Exceptional level of emotional intelligence and people skills, and ability to work easily with a wide range of people
- Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative
- Ability to multi-task and coordinate several projects simultaneously while keeping track of the big picture
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent experience
- Prior experience managing staff
- Social justice organizing experience preferred
- CFRE preferred
- Residence in Louisiana preferred; in any case, must be able to travel frequently inside and outside of Louisiana to meet with leadership, staff, and current or prospective donors.
- Salary – $60,000 – $75,000, commensurate with experience
