The position

The Director of Organizing and Field Support reports to the VEA Executive Director and is a participant on the executive management team that provides association leadership and direction. The Director manages, counsels and evaluates department staff.   The Director is assisted by the Uniserv Manager.

This position is responsible for directing, designing , piloting and implementation organizing projects.   The Director provides training to UniServ Councils in understanding the relationship between VEA and locals as it relates to the roles and responsibilities of staff and governance.

The Director also:

  • Oversees VEA staff members’ training needs and staff development.
  • Supervises mentoring a program for UniServ Directors and new professional staff.
  • Coordinates VEA New Staff Orientation Program for UniServ Directors.
  • Proposes and administers the annual departmental budget.
  • Advises the Executive Director on personnel and programmatic issues, as appropriate.
  • Coordinates the annual UniServ grant application to NEA.
  • Has responsibility for the design and preparation for general, headquarter and regional staff meetings.
  • Oversees Reggie Smith Organizing School program and ESP conferences.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities required:

  • Demonstrated training, organizing and coordinating skills necessary to successfully enhance trainee and staff performance, and complete group projects and activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in networking and working with professional groups and organizations.
  • Must possess ability to effectively manage employees to accomplish VEA goals and objectives. 
  • Must demonstrate ability to interact effectively with the association Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated experience, expertise and success in planning and implementing member organizing and mobilization campaigns and plans.
  • Successful experience in managing multiple projects and staff simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in coaching and developing staff.
  • Experience representing members and issues.
  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required,

Preferred Experience

  • Ten years of related experience
  • Advanced degree preferred. 
  • Bargaining experience preferred.
  • Experience working with unionized staff preferred.
  • Knowledge of association/professional organization governance, UniServ/staffing structure, policies, programs, issues and master contracts between VEA and its Unions very desirable.

Other

  • Must have a Virginia drivers’ license and have a vehicle.
  • Position based out of VEA Headquarters in Richmond with up to 25% travel.

Salary and Fringe Benefits:

Salary is negotiable depending upon applicant’s experience and qualifications. The position also includes an excellent fringe benefits package.
