Communications Director

Based in Tacoma, WA

SUMMARY
Coordinates and manages public relations and communications to execute the external and internal communications strategies of a medium sized private sector union.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned. This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Develops, in consultation with senior leadership, the UFCW Local 367’s yearly communication strategic plan.
  • Ensures the day-to-day implementation of the organization’s communications, public relations tactics and strategies via digital, social media, texting, and print.
  • Implements and ensures UFCW Local 367 messaging is included across all external and internal communications.
  • Develops and oversees the department’s budget and staffing needs.
  • Manages external press relations, including preparation of news releases and feature articles, arrangement of press interviews with both local and national press.
  • Coordinates with field staff to develop targeted communications strategies for local, regional, or national campaigns.
  • Advises senior officers on the communications goals, tactics, and strategies critical to the success of the UFCW.
  • Creative and strategic thinker, and a willingness to bring new ideas on how to expand, develop, and magnify the UFCW’s media presence, both locally and nationally.

Education and/or Experience
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in communications, public relations, or political science/campaign management is preferred, but not required; three to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of labor unions, their goals and purpose, and labor organization structure is preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse team.
  • Experience executing external and internal public relations strategies via digital, social media, texting, and print.
  • Ability to interact and lead media outreach highly desirable.

Personal Characteristics

  • Strong interpersonal skills required to deal effectively with a variety of difficult and abstract situations. Ability to work with people of different backgrounds, culture, and literacy. Self-directed. Ability to quickly grasp concepts and use resources.
  • Job Demands
  • Work continuously is performed under stressful situations with multiple projects and initiatives occurring simultaneously under deadline and without supervision. Some travel may be required.

Working Conditions
The work is performed in a normal office environment, sometimes outside, sometimes at the represented workplace. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

Physical Demands
The position involves, but is not limited to, good written and oral communications skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and reaching.
