Staff Organizer II

Based in San Dimas, CA

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Organizer II is responsible for conducting external and internal organizing campaigns and other mobilization and leadership development activities involving Union members and future Union members. The Staff Organizer II, as part of the organizing team, will assist in developing and implementing action plans, strategies and tactics for all campaigns. This position reports to the Organizing Director, who is the direct supervisor and works under the direction of the Organizing Director or designee and/or the UNAC/UHCP Officers. The Staff Organizer II keeps the Organizing Director and/or designee regularly apprised of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings and other contacts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Include but are not limited)

  • Participates in the selection of employer targets for external and internal organizing campaigns; researches potential organizing targets; and collects and analyzes potential target data and information.
  • Participates in the formulation of an organizing plan for each targeted employer based on research, analysis and use of organizing expertise
  • Selects and recruits workers from unorganized employers to serve on organizing committees, orients and trains them in organizing goals and tactics, collaborates with them in determining organizing strategy, leads them and monitors their activities on behalf of the Union in organizing their co-workers and related planning and tasks
  • Participates in selecting, recruiting, orienting, training, leading and monitoring of volunteer organizers from within the UNAC/UHCP membership for participation in external and internal organizing campaigns and other mobilization activities
  • Develops broad, representative organizing committees of worker-leaders; deploys committee to move the campaign
  • Conducts one-on-one and group-based organizing, assesses attitudes of individual workers and committees with the guidance of a Staff Organizer III
  • Visits job sites and homes to communicate with workers and implement all matters described herein
  • Writes leaflets and other materials for organizing campaigns and mobilization activities
  • Obtains and/or creates, maintains and updates employee lists and electronic databases
  • Recommends strategies, tactics and other actions to the Organizing Director or designee

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A. or B.S., in a relevant field
  • Three or more years of experience working in a similar capacity
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and interact effectively with potential union members, Affiliate leadership and existing Union members, including excellent “one-on-one” and group interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple organizing deadlines, and generate required computer-formatted reports in a timely manner
  • Background in labor movement and/or progressive movements
  • Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend and holiday work
  • Extensive travel may be required; valid current California Driver License
