CASA & CASA IN ACTION SYNOPSIS:
CASA’s mission is to create a more just society by building power and improving the quality of life in working class and immigrant communities. Our vision is a future where we stand in our own power, our families live free from discrimination and fear, and our diverse communities thrive as we work with our partners to achieve full human rights for all. CASA has a sister organization, CASA in Action, a separate, but related, nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Although CASA and CASA in Action share a common goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, they are separate organizations with their own board of directors. A set of employees at the two organizations, including the person filling this position, shares their time between the two organizations. This has no effect on salary or benefits.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Chief of Politics and Communications the Pennsylvania Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Pennsylvania based programs and execution of CASA’s mission in Pennsylvania. S/he will initially develop deep knowledge of the political and services landscape, core programs, operations, and business plans so S/he will develop a plan and executive it based on CASA’s vision, mission and strategic plan.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, some of the following which are discussed and prioritized by the employee and supervisor, and reflected in individual and program annual workplans:
- Provide strategic vision for the development and expansion of CASA programming in Pennsylvania that both implements CASA’s strategic plan and does so in light of local needs and opportunities.
- Growing and providing direct oversight to workforce, youth, educational, health, citizenship, and social services programs with the objective of both short-term learning for CASA’s members and to improve economic stability of individuals and families.
- In partnership with Sr. Director of Organizing and Lead Organizer, identify, design and implement strategic campaigns to ensure the accomplishment of local and state wins chosen by our Pennsylvania leaders. Ensuring the engagement of the Pennsylvania community in federal advocacy chosen by the CASA-wide Leadership Council.
- In Partnership with the Development Department and the Executive Director, spearhead Pennsylvania development efforts as CASA and CASA in Action continue to grow. A very critical role will be to keep and expand local and state contracts and grants and fundraising activities to support existing programs and expansion of programming.
- Overseeing management of program expenditures; identifying and preparing applications for alternative funding sources including advocacy for state-level funding
- Ensuring program and grant deliverables are collected and reported upon accurately and in a timely manner
- Serving as a member of CASA’s Executive team and providing strategic CASA-wide vision for the development of programs and implementation of strategic goals
- Supervise staff, personnel, volunteers and consultants; ensuring that professional development opportunities are provided and all HR policies are followed
- Development and maintenance of relationships with key national, state, and local advocacy allies and policy-makers, including candidates for office.
- Serving as a spokesperson for CASA and its members in Pennsylvania
- Working closely with key CASA department leadership – including but not limited to the Chiefs of Services and Development and Finance, the Senior Director of Organizing, and the Communications Manager, and the Director of Human Resources and Operations – to ensure that the entire force of our organization is invested in the development and growth of our work in Pennsylvania.
- Closely collaborate with the Director of CASA in Action and the Senior Director of Organizing to ensure that we have aligned and strategic engagement in electoral opportunities in Pennsylvania.
- Maintain close contact with CASA’s Leadership Council and Board Members in Pennsylvania in coordination with the Pennsylvania Lead Organizer.
- Host regular multi-departmental Pennsylvania meetings and ensure high quality and consistent communication across programs operating in Pennsylvania.
- And other duties assigned by supervisor related to position.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
- Minimum of seven years’ experience working in non-profit sector, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Valid US driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Experience developing, promoting and implementing non-traditional programs; establishing and overseeing cooperative agreements; as well as representing programs to a variety of audiences;
- Experience leading policy campaign’s, preferably around immigration and worker’s rights, but not limited to housing, police reform and LGBTQ rights;
- Experience preparing and administering budgets; directing and evaluating the work of others;
- Experience supervising individuals and/or teams;
- Ability to plan, manage and organize multiple projects; identifying and analyzing problems/issues and recommending strategies and solutions;
- Excellent writing and speaking skills in English required, Spanish preferred
- Must be efficient at communicating effectively orally and in writing; establishing cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
- Demonstrated interest in working with the immigrant community in Pennsylvania, especially working class Latino/as and strong commitment to social justice and the progressive movement;
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple ongoing projects;
- Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends;
- Passion, idealism, progressive and pro-immigrant is a must. Integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
