Assistant Communications Director

Based in San Jose, CA

CSEA is a union that represents 245,000 classified employees in 750 public schools and community colleges in California.

The Assistant Director manages our website, social, print and digital media, branding, marketing, and public relations.

The Communications Department has 14 staff who create strategic communications to recruit members, run political campaigns, market our services, and profile our members’ lives. The Department operates an on-site television studio and print shop that delivers over 6 million print jobs a year.

The Assistant Director helps plan and direct their activities. This key, hands-on position is highly visible, and works closely with Field Operations, senior management, and Association officers.

We are headquartered in San Jose, CA. CSEA has 12 offices and 300 staff in California.

Examples of duties:

  • Approve content, appearance and quality of materials for recruiting members, political campaigns, and marketing.
  • Coordinate themes and messages for CSEA’s website, print and social media.
  • Direct media technology and on-demand media for large and small audiences.
  • Supervise video and audio production, scripting, filming and editing.
  • Participate in strategic planning for programs, campaigns, polling, and focus groups.
  • Develop public and media relations.
  • Write, present training on communications styles, techniques, and social media.
  • Coordinate work flow between graphic design and print production.
  • Ensure the CSEA brand has a consistent look and style.
  • Manage the project calendar and budget for the Department.
  • Coordinate staff training.
  • Perform other problem-solving and responsibilities as they arise.

Experience

  • Four years’ experience writing or editing digital or print publications or social media.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or literature.
