About the SEIU Florida State Council:
The SEIU Florida State Council, which represents over 55,000 workers in the areas of health care, public services, property services, laundry and distribution, coordinates the joint political and legislative work of SEIU Locals throughout the State. We are part of SEIU, the largest and fastest-growing union in North America.
About the Position:
The Executive Director provides leadership and support to the Executive Board including convening state council meetings and calls and communication. Leads the program to accomplish Executive Board goals and direction. The Executive Director manages the State Council staff, directs the planning and execution of Council political campaigns and projects, oversees the development of the Council budget, administers Council PACs and other political funds, and coordinates joint work among SEIU Locals. He/She represents the Council to various coalitions and allies, assists local unions in the development of strong political and issue programs, and functions as part of the staff-level leadership of the SEIU in Florida.
Direction and Decision Making:
The Executive Director reports directly to and is accountable to the State Council Executive Board and is responsible for communicating regularly with all local leaders of the State Council.
Required Experience and Skills:
- Six or more years of organizing and political experience with one or more of the following types of organizations: labor unions, progressive issue advocacy organizations, community organizations, political campaigns, and progressive elected officials
- Experience in and knowledge of political campaigns
- Knowledge and experience in use of polling, research, targeting, direct mail, and opposition research
- Knowledge and experience working with voter files, VAN and voter targeting
- Experience in candidate recruitment and interviewing/endorsement process
- Commitment to activist and leadership development
- Experience in and knowledge of issue and legislative campaigns
- Experience in and knowledge of public policy analysis
- Ability to lead and manage staff leading in an often demanding, campaign-style environment
- Ability to manage multiple lines of accountability simultaneously
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SEIU
- Experience in successfully leading and implementing legislative and/or political organizational programs
Specific Responsibilities:
- Development and coordination of political and legislative programs and plans
- Management of state-level issue campaigns that are priorities of the Executive Board
- Design and execute political field campaigns for candidate, initiative, and independent expenditure campaigns at the direction of the Executive Board and their designated political staff
- Develop and oversee member political organizer program, as directed
- Develop and coordinate member and activist leadership development programs and maintain consistent development opportunities throughout the political work
- Coordinate legislative/lobby work
- Develop coalitions and joint work with political allies and partners
- Provide strategic, political, and legislative assistance to the Executive Board and SEIU Local Unions in Florida
- In coordination with local union staff and leadership, serve as representative of the State Council to workgroups of SEIU national political staff
- In coordination with local union staff and leadership, represent the State Council at meetings with elected officials, allies, and other partners, as directed
- Oversee the development of annual and campaign budget plans
- Supervise all State Council accounting, financial record keeping, reporting, and compliance
- Oversee the hiring, supervision, and development of staff
- Performing all other tasks and duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
The position is based out of South Florida. Work in the field and travel is required.
Salary Range:
The position offers a competitive salary and benefit package. Specific salary will be commensurate with experience.
