Based in Jefferson Parish, LA

Jefferson Parish Federation of Teachers project is seeking a full time Community and Labor Organizer. This position is supervised by the Project Director and works closely with the Lead Organizer in conjunction with the Jefferson Parish Federation of Teachers leadership. Organizers perform a number of duties including building coalitions with the community, helping build a positive narrative around public education with partners in the community, recruiting new members, identifying potential leaders and activists, and tracking data in their assigned areas.

Applicants should have a working knowledge of unions and a strong commitment to the labor movement. Ideal candidates will have experience with community organizing, strong one-on-one organizing skills, deep knowledge of the education workplace, significant experience working with diverse populations, and a commitment to a participatory and progressive labor movement. Work will be based in Jefferson Parish, but may require some statewide and national travel. This job often requires long and irregular hours and some weekend work.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the Lead Organizer on daily and weekly activities to grow JFT community presence and relations in Jefferson Parish
  • Make appointments for meetings, one-on-one visits, and other interaction with community members in Jefferson Parish
  • Organize educators and school related personnel to recruit new members, identify activists, and develop committees to move the mission of the local
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a daily basis
  • Attend daily and weekly meetings with supervisor to discuss progress and make plans
  • Occasional travel to organizing projects in the state and country as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong commitment to the labor movement
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and achieve goals
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work with a diverse population
  • Must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills
  • Must be competent in basic computer/web functions, including email and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to take direction and work well on a team
  • Must be willing to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Must be willing to travel including overnights
  • Proof of a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle is required
  • Willingness to learn, take risks, and build power for working people

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Jefferson Parish, community organizations, and local politics
  • Knowledge of and experience as a member of a union or organizer
  • Knowledge of public sector unions in non-collective bargaining situations
  • Basic graphic design and experience with databases

COMPENSATION:
The Organizer position starts at $40,000.00 per year.
