Business Representative

Based in the Wisconsin Region

Iron Workers Regional Shop Local Union No. 853 is an affiliate of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers that represents its members working in the manufacturing industries under 9a collective bargaining agreements.

The Business Representative will be based in the Wisconsin area.

The Business Representative will be responsible for serving, supporting and training local union leaders and members. His or her responsibilities include but are not be limited to attending local executive board and membership meetings, training union officers, participating in negotiations as required by the individual shops, assisting in contract enforcement and conducting grievance/arbitration hearings and other member-related activities. Organizing!

Applicant must be a self-motivated, deadline-oriented individual with the ability to work with people of all back grounds.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Develops and implements organizing strategies and campaign plans;
  • Recruits and retains members;
  • Identifies, recruits and develops member committees;
  • Develops and implements organizing plans for turnout at chapter and local union events;
  • Organizes and facilitates meetings;
  • Participates and/ or assists with International organizing campaigns, events, and activities;
  • Assists with political campaigns;
  • Helps develop and implement strategies to involve union members in activities that build the local union’s capacity to effectively represent employees in its jurisdiction, including internal communication and member mobilization.
  • Fosters recruitment and training of a network of union stewards who can assist members in solving problems on the job through contract enforcement and direct action.
  • Lead negotiator in bargaining contracts for assigned local unions.
  • Trains and works with local union leadership to ensure effective meetings, sound fiscal practices, and good internal communication.
  • Prepares and presents grievance arbitration cases as the principal union advocate.
  • Prepares leaflets, bulletins, etc. for communication with membership.
  • Develops and maintains productive relationships with other Iron Worker locals, District Councils and the Central Labor Councils.

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • A strong commitment to organizing and representing members and non-members;
  • Skill and experience organizing campaigns and developing member leaders;
  • Skill and experience in strategic thinking, organizational development, campaign development and long-term planning;
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines and numerical goals;
  • Knowledge of organizing practices;
  • Excellent verbal and analytical skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with IW officers, members, and staff;
  • Ability to travel frequently (weekly basis) and work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Strong commitment to social justice and building the labor movement.
  • Experience and training necessary to conduct contract negotiations.
  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of people.
  • Leadership skills to educate and motivate members.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to write well and to author letters, newsletters and contract language.
  • Knowledge of or ability to acquire computer skills
  • Fluent in Spanish
