SEIU Local 1000 is a cutting-edge labor union that represents 95,000 state employees in nine bargaining units throughout the State of California. We want to talk to you if you’re experienced in representing individuals in administrative hearings and strategic negotiations.

Duties:

  • Work with worksite stewards and leaders to represent members through the grievance and arbitration system, as well as mobilizing members to take action around issues in the worksite.
  • Process grievances and appeals up to and including final level of SPB, PERB, or arbitration, including investigation, preparation of witnesses, exhibits and briefs, and general development of cases.
  • Represent members or the Union at the worksite, in disciplinary meetings, and in hearings, planning and prioritize cases strategically and assisting in preparation of required briefs, exhibits or preparation of witnesses.
  • Coordinate grievances in support of contract campaigns, meet and confers and the resolution of other worksite issues.
  • Lead, motivate and mobilize worksite leaders, stewards and members in internal and external organizing, politics, community alliance building and other union activities.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with staff and member leaders, working in a team environment.
  • Identify, recruit, train and develop worksite leaders and stewards.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication networks in worksites.
  • Manage working relationships with member leaders, stewards, and grievants.
  • Respond to issues raised by members regarding workplace matters within required deadlines.
  • Create and maintain lists and track information, which may include input on, and operation of, computerized database systems.
  • Fills out and processes forms and documents in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Drives as directed and travels as needed.
  • Works long and irregular hours including weekends.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and service workers.
  • Knowledge of California’s State Personnel Board, CalHR, and individual State Departments is preferred.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to listen actively and articulate issues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to work long hours as necessary or travel frequently.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license, car and insurance.
