Civic Engagement Coordinator

The Organization for Black Struggle is an active partner in The Missouri Organizing and Voter Engagement Collaborative (MOVE) and MOVE Action. MOVE(C3)and MOVE Action(C4) are statewide collaborations whose goal is to build power for economic and racial justice. OBS base-building efforts reflect our strategy to develop informed voters and leaders who are prepared to engage in democratic projects and movement building. We are committed to organizing towards voter engagement that can compel both political and cultural transformation. An important component of this organizing work is the Black/Rural Power Summit which seeks to build a grassroots, multi-racial movement based upon Black and rural integrated voter engagement programs.

General Staff Expectations

  • Practice the core values and conscientious work style of OBS
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and designated organizational activities
  • Attend all trainings mandated by OBS
  • Keep abreast of issues, policies, legislation, research, etc. related to staff’s scope of work
  • Assist in building and sustaining collaborative relationships that strengthen and expand the racial justice movement locally and nationally
  • Contribute write-ups and photos on work
  • Complete summations of work and weekly report forms (based upon work plans)
  • Taking initiative, being innovative and resourceful

General Responsibilities

  • Creating work plans for campaigns and projects based upon OBS strategy and tactics.
  • Working with the OBS team to implement voter engagement campaigns and projects and to assess the progress toward goals, and to align internal and external strategies.
  • Working with the Executive Director to fulfill statewide and local deliverables around voter engagement work in coordination with leaders and staff.
  • Developing base building strategies with the OBS team for engaging voters in the Tornado model-Universe of Voters, Directly Contacted Voters, Supportive Voters, and Activist Voters
  • Updating and maintaining the Voter Activation Network (VAN);creating reports based upon campaigns and that inform OBS base-building goals.
  • Representing OBS at key statewide and national public events as assigned.
  • Representing OBS in local and statewide coalitions.
  • Coordinating the organizing components of MOVE with other relevant OBS work to maximize effectiveness and progress towards strategic goals.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of experience in community organizing, civic engagement organizing, labor organizing, or grassroots-focused political campaigns including a general understanding of direct voter contact programs.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize several tasks/projects concurrently and work effectively either independently or in close collaboration with others.
  • VAN and Excel skills preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, have good written and verbal communication skills,
  • Attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and provide.
  • Experience working with diverse communities, with demonstrable cultural competency.
  • Must be willing to travel within Missouri, have functioning vehicle with valid driver’s license and car insurance.
  • Must be social media savvy.
