Campaign Coordinator

Based in San Diego, CA

The San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council represents 136 unions, over 200,000 union members, and their families in San Diego and Imperial Counties. We sees to improve the lives of all working families in the region by empowering the unions and members we represent. We seek to strengthen the voice of working families in the electoral process and are dedicated to the creation of strong community partnerships to advance shared social and economic justice goals.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about the labor movement and in creating real change for working people in San Diego.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Campaign Coordinator

  • Coordinates and executes the Labor Council’s political campaigns and programs
  • Manages precinct walk data and phone bank software
  • Trains and supervises canvassing teams to engage both union and community members out in the field when necessary
  • Assists the Committee on Political Education (COPE) program, which includes coordinating candidate recruitment and endorsements and identifying key races
  • Manages independent expenditure campaigns in coordination with staff and Executive Secretary-Treasurer, and oversees budget for political activities
  • Assist with policy development projects and responding to short-term research requests from staff and management

Field Organizing

  • Organizes grassroots political action efforts of the Labor Council in conjunction with our affiliated unions, including political campaigns, issues campaigns, and membership education and mobilization
  • Develops and maintains relationships with affiliated unions and their key leadership, staff, and members, along with Labor Constituency Groups
  • Develops and maintains relationships with community allies to develop collaborative strategies and strengthen Labor Council goals
  • Recruits, trains, leads and motivates interns in collaboration with staff
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of special events including the Labor Council Annual Dinner, the Labor Day Breakfast, rallies, and special events

Legislative and Advocacy Support

  • Conducts research and provides briefings for legislation on multiple levels of government
  • Assists in preparation and lobbying efforts with elected officials in coordination with the staff and Executive Secretary-Treasurer
  • Assists in tracking local jurisdictions to identify potential labor interest

Qualifications Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science or related field is preferred but not required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience with computers, and familiarity with databases and website design
  • Broad political knowledge and an understanding of local labor issues, political reporting requirements, and lobbying rules are preferred
  • Ability to work independently and effectively under strict timelines; ability to work with union leaders, staff and members, elected officials and the broader community and ability to fully embrace the mission of the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council are required
  • Expert level of PDI preferred
  • Expert Level of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access required
  • Experience with federal, state and local legislative processes
  • Experience in lobbying and public policy development
  • Knowledge of and proven success in planning and implementing strategic
  • Community and political campaigns
  • Able to work irregular and long hours
  • Able to multi-task, self-manage, and be flexible with a changing workload

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Bi-lingual: English/Spanish
  • Experience working on a diverse team
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences and diverse communities.
  • A minimum of two years union staff experience
