American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) is a labor organization that represents the people who create and present America’s operatic, choral and dance performances across the world. AGMA represent approximately 7,500 singers, dancers, performers and production personnel at all principal opera houses, ballet and modern dance companies in the United States. The Union provides forceful advocacy and defense of its members’ employment and artistic rights and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO Branch of Associated Actors and Artists of America.

Summary
Reporting to the National Executive Director, the Eastern Executive is responsible for conducting negotiations; contract enforcement, policy implementation, site visits, ensuring healthy and safe working conditions and internal and external organizing and communication for opera, dance and signatory companies in the New York Metropolitan Area and other areas as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day administration of AGMA contracts and coordination of membership functions at employers in the New York metropolitan area and other assigned areas.
  • Conduct regular on-site visits to AGMA shops; attending shop meetings, rehearsals, auditions and performances as necessary.
  • Serve as AGMA’s initial representative for grievances, arbitrations and other administrative hearings, including processing and filing claims and grievances on behalf of members, in consultation with outside counsel.
  • Develop strategies for contract negotiations including proposal development, contract campaigns, and other programs.
  • Conduct and/or participate in the negotiation of contracts with employers.
  • Review provisions of the various collective bargaining agreements and ensure employers are complying with the terms and conditions of the agreements.
  • Coordinate negotiating committees and seek input from all affected members.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with members, signatories and employers of AGMA members, area leaders, related unions and government officials.
  • Monitor employer contract waiver requests.
  • Consult on an on-going basis with other Senior Staff members throughout the country.
  • Attend and report at New York area meetings.
  • Provide training and union education to new delegates, committees, and members.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of shops to recruit, develop and train new leaders.
  • Engage in organizing new shops (strategy, establishing contact, meeting with and educating members of target companies, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of related experience in labor relations, administration and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Experience in conducting grievance and arbitration proceedings preferred.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of personalities.
  • Strong research and analytical skills necessary to assess and plan effective projects.
  • Ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities.
