Based out of Tukwila, WA

Position:
The Washington Exempt Organizing Project seeks an Organizer who wants to join the fight to preserve and strengthen quality public education and employee working conditions. This project is in partnership between the AFT and AFT-Washington.

This is a full-time position to work on internal organizing campaigns for locals of AFT-Washington. The position will be based out of Tukwila Washington, but will require travel around the state. The Organizer is responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. Union organizing experience preferred.

Responsibilities and Duties include but not limited to:

  • Develop, maintain, and update organizing plans congruent with the member engagement goals of AFT Washington for assigned locals
  • Implement strategies and goals for specific campaigns and initiatives
  • Perform on-site visits and have regular contact with leaders and members to determine issues to organize and mobilize members around
  • Assist leaders with setting timelines and identify issues to organize around
  • Membership growth and mobilization of members
  • Identify and train leaders and activists

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Previous union organizing experience preferred
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a plan
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals
  • Ability to work in politically sensitive and high pressure environments and can exercise excellent political judgement and discretion
  • Knowledge of institutionalized oppression and ability to identify it and contribute to the organization’s efforts to undo it.
  • Commitment to social and economic justice, and public education
  • Experience working in community, student, labor, or environmental activism
  • Ability to travel as needed and possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work weekends and unusual hours
  • Computer proficiency is required including database/spreadsheet, Power Point, Word
