The Colorado Education Association is recruiting experienced and qualified candidates who are passionate about helping elevate educator voices and building organizing and collective bargaining power to improve working and learning conditions for educators and students. The Director of New Growth Organizing and Capacity Building will be on the Center for Organizing Team.

The Director of New Growth Organizing & Capacity Building will coordinate with staff and leaders statewide to facilitate training and provide support to locals in the development and implementation of their collective bargaining, organizing and contract enforcement strategies and campaigns. The Director of New Growth Organizing & Capacity Building is also responsible for developing and expanding bargaining for the common good strategies and other creative strategies throughout the state.

Essential Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated use of sound professional judgment.

  • Knowledge of organizing principles and ability to develop and implement organizing plans.
  • Proficiency in basic computer technologies.

  • Ability to write a comprehensive organizing campaign plan that demonstrates an understanding of campaign messaging, strategy, last to first planning, and data analysis and to work with leaders to implement such plan.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully developing, implementing and winning comprehensive organizing campaigns that have resulted in increased membership, leadership and member engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and implementing organizing blitzes including development of organizing rap, assessment questions, tracking tools and follow-up plans.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing and leadership identification and development including skills in utilizing data for targeting organizing campaigns and experience with organizing conversations, assessments and moving people to action.
  • Demonstrated experience in community organizing and coalition building among diverse organizations with competing interests.
  • Demonstrated experience working on successful external/scratch organizing campaigns.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff and leaders.
  • Facilitation, training and presentation skills including the ability to train leaders and members with the necessary skills and tools to recruit, retain and engage members and external partners.
  • Ability to use organizing techniques to prepare locals for bargaining, policy, and legislative issues.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work long and irregular hours including some weekends.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with school finance systems.
  • Familiarity with public school employee salary schedules and alternative forms of compensation.
  • Familiarity with community, education and labor groups and coalitions in Colorado.
  • Familiarity with the Voter Activation Network (VAN)
  • Familiarity with issues affecting ESPs (education support professionals) and charter school educators
  • Ability to demonstrate a basic understanding of employee evaluation policies and procedures, including the evaluation appeal process.
  • Ability to demonstrate a basic understanding of, and advocacy regarding policies and strategies that impact education professions and student learning.
  • Familiarity with collective bargaining in both interest based and traditional bargaining environments as well as bargaining for the common good strategies.
  • Experience organizing through house visits and planning and implementing organizing tactics and strategies including rallies, marches and other direct actions.
  • Successful experience working in the area of labor relations and/or research including strategic research to guide organizing and campaign strategy.
  • Ability to design, produce and manipulate database reports, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Spanish proficiency.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as the coordinator and trainer of leaders and staff in new growth organizing, community engagement, planning, leadership identification and development, scratch organizing and other capacity building efforts.
  • Create and lead a statewide new growth organizing and capacity-building program, including focusing on building and organizing membership and new locals among ESPs (education support professionals) and charter school educators.
  • Serve as a resource to staff and leaders with growth organizing, particularly new growth, including: providing training, creating and sharing materials, coordinating events focused on growth, and more.
  • Engage in new growth organizing and capacity building efforts with leaders, members and staff.
  • Provide strategic support and content for communications both internal and external, related to statewide new growth organizing campaigns.
  • Support the development and implementation of the CEA bargaining program.
  • Work with local affiliates and units to implement the CEA strategic plan within designated units, locals and constituency groups.
  • Serve as a resource to local negotiators, leaders and staff regarding member and community organizing to support bargaining and bargaining for the common good strategies.
  • Provide training for leaders, members and staff to strengthen their bargaining, organizing and advocacy skills.
  • Develop qualitative and quantitative reports related to the assigned work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits
This is a bargaining unit position with a salary range of $68,218 to $123,475 based upon prior experience. Fringe benefits include auto allowance; liberal vacation and sick leave; holidays; health, dental, disability, and life insurance; defined contribution retirement benefit and 401(k) plan.
