ABOUT APEA:
The mission of APEA/AFT, AFL-CIO is to enhance the lives of our members and their families by practicing the highest professional and ethical standards and promoting social and economic well-being in the workplace and our communities.

This position is a result of a joint project between Alaska Public Employees Associates (APEA) and the American Federation of Teachers.

Salary: Competitive with benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The SAPO will be responsible for strengthening the internal, political and legislative education programs of APEA/AFT and the American Federation of Teachers through:

  • Developing and implementing an effective and accountable member-to-member communication system;
  • Identifying and recruiting activists among the APEA/AFT membership;
  • Facilitating and guiding APEA/AFT participation in coalition groups;
  • Increasing APEA/AFT political fundraising;
  • Considerable travel in Alaska;
  • Other duties assigned by the Business Manager of APEA/AFT and/or the American Federation of Teachers.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years’ experience of designing and implementing political and/or union grassroots or related programs;
  • A demonstrated writing ability and the ability to communicate goals and objectives to affiliates;
  • Experience with campaign field writing or fundraising is a plus;
  • Working knowledge of Alaska’s coalitions and groups with which APEA participates is a plus;
  • Strong computer, writing, speaking, fundraising and training skills;
  • Ability to work well with groups and individuals with a wide variety of personalities, needs and occupations.
