Construction Worker Lead Organizer with CTUL (Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha)

CTUL seeks to hire a Lead Organizer to lead the team organizing construction workers in the Twin Cities metro area. This position will require the ability to work independently and with a team. Program Description;
This program focuses on leadership development to build power with non-union construction workers across the Twin Cities to end wage theft in the industry and create structures in which workers can have a voice on the job. To accomplish this, there is an intensive focus on base building and leadership development. This position will primarily focus on developing the team who builds a base of workers and leads mini-campaigns with workers who experience wage theft as part of a larger strategic campaign.

Position Description:
This is a full-time, salaried position both organizing workers and developing organizers to organize workers. This work will be carried out in the community and at workers’ homes and workplaces to organize workers to join a movement fighting for fair wages and working conditions for themselves and others. This includes meeting new workers, identifying potential leaders, and developing leadership to build power in their workplace and in their communities. This is a lead organizer position which means developing leadership and skills of the construction organizing team, leading the process with the worker committee to decide on campaign strategy, and playing a role in the leadership of CTUL.

Primary Responsibilities:
Construction worker organizer (45% of work)

• Find new workers at work and at their homes
• Set up 1-1 meetings with workers identified at work, and through other contacts
• Motivate and agitate workers to fight, develop worker leadership
• Be persistent obtaining commitments from workers
• Get workers to take action including work stoppages/strikes
• Build CTUL’s membership and collect membership contributions

Construction Team Leadership (50% of work)

• Develop the leadership and supervise construction organizing staff
• Use existing structures and create new ones when necessary to identify progress and set achievable goals
• Lead regular team meetings to evaluate and improve work
• Communicate high expectations of organizing from organizers, hold team and individuals accountable
• Work with team to develop meeting agendas and facilitate meetings to engage construction workers
• Work with members, organizers, and others in the organization to develop knowledge, tools, and campaign strategy
• Take leadership role in carrying out campaign strategy, including but not limited to: developing relationships with organizational partners and allies, communicating with bosses, leading direct actions.
• Communicate organizational priorities and needs to construction organizing team

CTUL general support (5% of time)

• Perform tasks as part of the team that develop leadership with all workers in CTUL’s base
• Support other organizers when necessary for organizational goals
• Be part of raising money to support the organization

General Requirements:

• Have a passion for organizing workers
• Commitment to advancing CTUL’s mission
• Be able to push workers and organizers outside of their comfort zones
• Be consistent and accountable in completing your goals and expectations
• Strong communication skills
• Comfortable in taking initiative to solve problems and able to be self-directed in day to day work
• Have a car and be comfortable driving
• Have a flexible schedule, including some early mornings, nights and weekends
• Bilingual English/Spanish speaking and writing skills
• Minimum three years experience organizing

Past supervisory experience and/or experience working in the construction industry preferable but not required.

• $43,900 yearly salary
