UNITE HERE! Local 2 is considered one of the most progressive and innovative local unions in the nation. Local 2 represents approximately 90% of the workers in major hotels in San Francisco as well as food service workers throughout the City. We also represent hotel and food service workers in San Mateo County including airport concessionaires and in-flight dining workers. Local 2 continues to organize to maintain and improve union density in the hotel and food service industries.

UNITE HERE! Local 2 is accepting applications for a Secretarial position in the Grievance Department. The appropriate candidate will be self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure as well as interact professionally with both staff and members. Language skills in Spanish or Chinese would be a bonus, although not required.

Specific job duties include:

  • Coordinating the scheduling of mediations with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and the California Mediation and Conciliation Service;
  • Creating and maintaining grievance, NLRB and contracts files, including responsibility for filing timely notices for contract reopeners and renewals;
  • General correspondence from the Grievance Department;
  • Contract updating and research;
  • Communicating with vendors for all office machine maintenance, supplies and repair;
  • Assistance with notetaking in negotiations as needed;
  • General typing and word processing for all staff, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PDF files as well as Excel or other spreadsheet programs;
  • Updating and maintaining a supply of member brochures;
  • Coordinating the ordering of business cards;
  • Various other clerical support work and special projects as needed.

  • Ability to be patient, personable, friendly and respectful to diverse membership; flexibility when priorities shift;
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with total confidentiality;
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills; self-motivated, energetic, quick learner and problem solver;
  • Ability to work well on a team and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Ability to analyze situations and make independent decisions or recommendations;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Commitment to labor and progressive social change.

Salary and benefits:

  • Union (OPEIU Local 3) wages and benefits including pension and medical benefits;
  • Forty (40) hours per week.
