Communications Organizer

Headquartered in Sacramento, CA
(remote location possible within Califorina)

Reports to: Director of Communications, Digital Director

Purpose: The Communications Organizer is responsible for ongoing communications work with State Council staff and SEIU locals to support member participation in grassroots, legislative, and electoral programs. This individual will work within Public Affairs and Strategic Campaigns Department to co-create and execute communications plans, strategies, and written materials for electoral and legislative campaigns. Also, this person is responsible for driving member communications, member training, and execute digital content and outreach. Ultimately, this individual’s goal will be to help ensure clear and consistent communication of SEIU CA’s voice by amplifying the voice and journey of workers and community partners.

Essential Functions include:

  • Work with state council and local union staff as guided by workgroup coordinators to produce written communications for legislative and electoral campaigns including worksite based communications and targeted mail programs.
  • Draft and edit communications copy (e.g. blogs, social media posts, member stories, lobby materials, flyers, etc.)
  • Organize, plan, and produce materials for press events. Prepare members to speak with the press.
  • Collect communication assets (video and photo) and maintain story collection spreadsheet
  • Coordinate with consultants and vendors to manage production and distribution of campaign communications.
  • Develop regular social media/web content and execute digital campaigns on social media channels.
  • Participate in and analyze opinion research to develop campaign strategies and message materials.
  • Prepare presentations, reports, and weekly work plan
  • Use the latest website technologies and technology related campaign tools as needed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Strong personal commitment to the labor movement and the mission of the California State Council of SEIU
  • 1 – 2 years of experience Working in a Labor Union or Grassroots organization
  • AA in Communications or a related field or similar experience (internships ok)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Spanish speaking/bilingual preferred
  • Familiarity with copywriting, print layout, and using digital platforms
  • Ability to communicate a visual idea with designers and other creative partners
  • Ability to estimate and provide realistic work plans around multiple projects and adjust as necessary until completion
  • Ability to effectively work with numerous issue teams to create communications strategies and written materials
  • Knowledge of legislative and political processes to be able to produce effective communications strategies for campaigns
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize multiple campaigns and projects simultaneously in a high-pressure environment requiring rapid adjustment to changing priorities, strategies and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences including union leaders, staff, members, policymakers, community based organizations and the media
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive and easy-to-understand training materials for staff and members
  • Professional demeanor and ability to work with different cultures and individuals in a training capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to creating a positive work environment that encourages personal responsibility, initiative and innovation
  • Self-motivated, great attitude and strong team player
  • Strong sense of professionalism and integrity
  • Commitment to continuous learning

Extent of Public Contact: Medium

Fiscal Responsibilities: None

Working Conditions and Environment: Have reliable transportation. Some statewide travel. Willingness to work long hours including weekends. Ability to maintain professionalism and productivity in high-pressure environment.
