Communications Specialist – Print & Design

Based in San Diego or Sacramento, CA

Job Summary: United Domestic Workers of America (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) seeks a Communications Specialist to amplify the voices of home care providers and America’s working families. The right person for this job will have a commitment to economic and social justice, and work with our team to create worker-centered communications. This position is primarily focused on the production of graphic design and printed materials, and includes coordination of event-based communications. We are looking for someone who is creative and has experience developing effective visual and written communications. This position is based in San Diego or Sacramento.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop marketing and outreach materials such as brochures, leaflets, posters, newsletters, and mailers.
  • Work with vendors and UDW staff to design, produce, and distribute print materials and union swag.
  • Coordinate mailings including our quarterly newsletter and keep evergreen materials updated.
  • Serve as a point person for sourcing materials and obtaining cost estimates from vendors.
  • Track project timelines and tasks.
  • Obtain accurate membership lists for mailings and material distribution.
  • Coordinate the translation of materials into multiple languages.
  • Execute event communications, including visuals, materials, video, photography and social media.
  • Coordinate photography when needed for UDW projects and events, and keep Flickr or related photo accounts organized and updated.
  • Create and obtain content for marketing materials such as member profiles and photos.
  • Design social media graphics when needed using Adobe CS, Canva, or similar.
  • Assist with proofing all materials before printing or publishing.
  • Catalogue print projects, photos, release forms and other UDW communications projects.
  • Order materials for UDW events and campaigns, and department office supplies.
  • Attend and cover UDW events, including taking photos and video, talking to members, and posting to social media.
  • Assist with other communications projects such as video editing, press outreach, prepping members for interviews and public speaking, and more.
  • Assist with or lead communications trainings for UDW members and/or staff.
  • Support other activities related to UDW’s internal and external communications programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to take complex material and make it accessible to a broad audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to create effective and visually appealing printed materials.
  • Works well under pressure and with tight deadlines.
  • Able to handle numerous projects at the same time and work independently.
  • Commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Well-organized, attentive to detail, and able to follow verbal instructions.
  • Creative with an eye for design.
  • Software: MS Office Suite, Adobe CS, and other graphics or design programs as needed.
  • Film editing experience a plus.
  • Experience reaching out to press and obtaining media coverage a plus.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese a plus.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, sometimes including weekends, to complete projects and support campaigns.
  • Willingness to travel, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable car.
