Two-Year Temporary Position
Center for Science and Democracy
Union of Concerned Scientists
Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC

The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

We’re looking for an Outreach Coordinator to help us cultivate and maintain the UCS Science Network. The Science Network is a group of thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, public health specialists, and other experts across the US who care about the issues UCS works on, and have volunteered to put their knowledge to work in protecting our health, safety, and environment.

If you have a passion for community-building and developing leaders, this is the role for you. You’ll do both, while helping more diverse experts and scientists get involved with advocacy and civic engagement. The Science Network Outreach Coordinator is a core part of the UCS Science Network team and will serve as the lead on cultivating our Science Network members, especially scientists in the early stages of their careers. You’ll be thinking through and implementing community-building and leadership development projects, including a small grants fund to boost local advocacy efforts. You’ll also help the Science Network team build an inclusive community and diverse network of members and partners.

Responsibilities

  • Co-design and support Science Network engagement on UCS issues
  • Cultivate and mobilize Science Network members with equity and inclusion as a core component
  • Assist in the design and implementation of efforts to diversify the Science Network, and ensure that all Science Network activities are accessible and inclusive
  • Coordinate online events to spark continued interactive dialogue with Science Network members, foster peer-learning, and collaborate with partners via social media to build and mobilize leaders.

Oversee Strategy to Develop Early-Career Scientist Leaders

  • Design strategy for early-career scientist engagement and leadership development; help them develop policy and advocacy skills
  • Oversee design and promotion of trainings and resources to support their engagement
  • Contribute to strategy and lead implementation of a mentorship program
  • Coordinate Meet-Ups pilot project to offer coaching and financial resources for ECS Science Network members and integrate into ongoing ECS leadership opportunities Recruit and support early-career scientist leaders to share their stories and advice with peers through the blog, social media, and in-person gatherings
  • Act as lead point person for early-career scientist partnerships

Support UCS Engagement of Science Network

  • Join fellow organizers in UCS to design impactful scientist engagement opportunities that help us win campaigns and make real policy change
  • Provide logistical support for—and attend—meetings and conferences to recruit new Science Network members
  • Represent the UCS Science Network at gatherings related to the scientific community and the core values and issues the Network works on
  • Foster and helpful build an inclusive Science Network community
  • Support the cultivation of relationships with expert networks in organizations that serve scientists of color, and other underrepresented groups
  • Help to coordinate UCS presence at scientific conferences that serve marginalized or underrepresented groups
  • Strengthen the Science Network’s role in the science community by deepening connections with existing partners and connecting with new science policy and advocacy groups
  • Research engagement opportunities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), women’s universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and tribal colleges; help foster connections with the Science Network and UCS campaigns

Requirements
Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have strong outreach, project management, community-building, and organizational skills, and experience in handling multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously. Work requires three to five years of relevant experience with at least two years of comparable experience in membership/community cultivation, leadership development, organizing and campaigning, or high-level project management.

Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a diverse array of individuals, including professionals who may be experts and/or prominent in their fields. Ability to work independently, balance a multitude of tasks, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team is necessary.

The ability to look at the work through a racial justice and equity lens and identify opportunities to connect with scientists from diverse backgrounds is crucial.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We’ve adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.
