Union of Concerned Scientists

Outreach Associate
Science Network

Based in Cambridge, MA

One-Year Temporary Position
Center for Science and Democracy
Union of Concerned Scientists
Cambridge, MA

The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

We’re looking for an Outreach Associate to help us manage the UCS Science Network. The Science Network is a group of thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, public health specialists, and other experts across the US who care about the issues UCS works on, and have volunteered to put their knowledge to work in protecting our health, safety, and environment.

As Outreach Associate for the Science Network, you’ll build strong relationships with our 25,000 members, offer opportunities for them to expand their skills and experience as advocates, and help them share their successes. You’ll provide coordination support for your Science Network teammates at UCS, such as database updates and maintaining organizational systems. You’ll also help the team hold effective community-building and educational events (both online and in person). This position will provide the support that helps all Science Network projects run smoothly. You will get to build strong relationships with our members, offer opportunities for members to grow their skills and experience as effective advocates, and tell exciting stories of successful scientist engagement.

Responsibilities
The Science Network Outreach Associate will:

  • Ensure the Science Network runs smoothly and effectively
  • Assist in developing web and other online content, and promotional collateral that inspires and educates scientists to become effective advocates
  • Oversee vetting and onboarding systems for incoming Science Network members
  • Serve as main contact for Science Network members through direct email communications
  • Welcome and integrate new Science Network members by coordinating with other UCS programs and campaigns
  • Help design and provide logistical support for meetings, events, trainings, and conferences that serve marginalized or underrepresented scientists, for the purpose of recruiting new Science Network members online and in person
  • Manage the team’s internal organizational system and systems used to share information across staff and projects
  • Write and develop internal systems guidance/resources for Science Network team
  • Perform other duties as needed to strengthen the Science Network and its value within UCS
  • Create, collect, and share stories of successful scientist engagement
  • Includes designing and implementing a story bank to highlight successful scientist advocacy
  • Help curate, edit, and promote profiles and blogs to celebrate Science Network community members, including for the Science for Justice series
  • Update the UCS website on a consistent basis to spotlight relevant and timely action opportunities
  • Curate and share content to engage our community on social media around science advocacy and policy through digital content creation, storytelling, interacting with partners, and amplifying underrepresented voices in science advocacy through the Science Network social media channels
  • Develop monthly partnership updates and help track impact of partnership engagement
  • Support online community metrics and Science Network team assessments tracking

Requirements
Qualifications and Experience

Position requires 1-2 years of relevant experience in project management and outreach. Candidates must demonstrate a competence in word processing and spreadsheet software including Microsoft Word and Excel, database maintenance, and excellent Microsoft Outlook email and scheduling software and web research skills. Candidates must demonstrate strong written and verbal skills and a passion for storytelling. Familiarity with developing and posting content on common social media is preferred.

Effective communication and relationship-building with diverse individuals and perspectives is essential, as well as experience in advocacy. Experience working in an office and solid organizational skills are necessary for this position, as are considerable self-motivation and attention to detail. The ability to look at the work through a racial justice and equity lens and identify opportunities to connect with scientists from diverse backgrounds is crucial. Little exertion; will require extended periods at a computer. Candidate will be required to travel occasionally to meetings and conferences (approximately 3-5 overnights per year).

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We’ve adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.
