Background:  As the largest private sector labor union in North America, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) represents more than 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada.  Our members work primarily in retail food stores; food packinghouses and processing plants; department and drug stores; chemical facilities; and distillery and cannabis industries.

Job Description: Law clerks work closely with attorneys to produce legal research and writing on worker issues, including labor and civil rights laws and related legal proceedings and legislation.  When possible, law clerks will draft court documents, briefs, and research memoranda.  Law clerks also assist in developing potential litigation and counseling decision-makers.  We involve law clerks as much as possible in discussions with attorneys and staff so that clerks may understand how their work fits into a case and how unions develop strategies for organizing workers and advancing worker interests.  With approval, law clerks may use papers they draft for writing samples.

Requirements: Strong written and oral communication skills. Commitment to progressive social change, worker rights, the labor movement, and/or economic justice.  Completion of one year of law school.

Compensation and hours: $20.00 per hour; at least 20 hours/wk; and preferably with as many consecutive hours per day and days per week as possible.

Duration  Fall semester 2019, with possible extension through spring semester 2020.
