The Houston Organizing Project is a joint project with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and works to support the mission of goals of the Houston Federation of Teachers (HFT) and Houston Education Support Personnel (HESP) in order to secure a stronger voice for educators and stand for strong public schools. The HFT is the leading, strongest union voice for Houston educators, education professionals and classroom assistants and aides. HESP is the largest and strong voice for school support personnel in Houston, fighting for a living wage and respect for all workers.

The Houston Organizing Project seeks a Union Organizer to join our campaign to strengthen the voice of Houston educators and support personnel.

Organizers
Organizers are responsible for all aspects of union organizing including recruiting new members, building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and increasing and sustaining motivation of building leadership committees and activists.

Qualifications for Applicants:

  • Knowledge, experience and background indicating capabilities in organizing
  • Demonstrated commitment to empower workers through the labor movement or community or environmental organizing.
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Willingness to take direction and work in a team
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and travel as required
  • Computer literacy
  • A commitment to social justice and the mission of the AFT/HFT/HESP.
  • Valid drivers license and insured car.

Summary Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and mobilize workers.
  • Attend daily and weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan
  • activities
  • Site visit workers at their workplace or their home, conduct 1-1 visits, group meetings and other interactions with workers.
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required for periods of time.
  • Take direction on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and/or support
  • Other duties as assigned.

We provide in-depth on-the-job training in all aspects of union organizing for staff to build their skills and grow in the position.

This position requires long and irregular hours, weekend work, and occasional travel out of state.
