Training and Professional Learning Director
(Full Time)

Based in Quincy, MA

The Massachusetts Teachers Association is seeking a Director of Training and Professional Learning (TPL) who is a dynamic leader with a strong background in adult education and training focused especially on union skills, leadership development, professional development, and racial and social justice, along with demonstrated experience in event coordination and program evaluation. This position will report directly to the Executive Director-Treasurer.

The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is a union of 110,000 public school and college educators dedicated to defending public education as a fundamental right, protecting union rights, and building a just society. The MTA works to advance the quality and equity of public education in Massachusetts by securing the working conditions and professional respect and autonomy of educators, which improves learning conditions for all students, advocating for full funding for public education, and participating in broad coalitions to improve the lives of our students and their families.

The MTA has been charting a new direction for the past several years to build power through rank and file organizing and leadership development in order to grow stronger than ever despite assaults on public sector unions, to assure that the contractual, legal and professional rights of MTA members are enforced, and to challenge education “reforms” which serve to privatize public education and have undermined educator professionalism and the student learning experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Union Trainer/Strategist

• Leads collaborative efforts with stakeholders (members, leaders, committees, and staff) to develop the analysis and skills needed to continually improve and protect collective bargaining agreements, build Local capacity for membership engagement and collective action, advance a racial justice agenda, and advance MTA’s legislative, political, and policy objectives.
• Collaborates with MTA stakeholders to integrate popular education methodologies, including critical pedagogy and critical race theory, into our professional development, union skills, and leadership offerings.
• Oversees the design, delivery, and coordination of union education and training curricula and programming, from small trainings to multi-day conferences, for both members and staff.
• Oversees the design, delivery, and coordination of professional development curricula and programming for educators.

Visionary Leader

• Collaborates with the President, Vice President, and Executive Director-Treasurer to develop new strategies for building a strong union in a post-Janus world, and ensures Division alignment and capacity with the vision, mission, and strategic plan.
• Assists MTA governance with design and facilitation of leadership and staff retreats and strategic planning processes.

Effective Manager

• Plans, coordinates, and manages the daily operation of the Training and Professional Division, supervising seven staff to fulfill the mission of the MTA and meet established goals and objectives.
• Develops systems to ensure high-quality professional development and professional learning including standards, a recruitment process, preparatory training on content and delivery techniques, and rigorous evaluation for timely feedback.
• Coordinates an organization-wide annual calendar of over 100 events, engaging all stake holders and Division managers in effective planning and scheduling.
• Oversees logistics, including venue contracts, set-up, registration, materials, meals, and technology for all MTA events, from small trainings and meetings to large, multi-day conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of five years leadership/management experience including but not limited to the ability to inspire, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate programs and personnel.
• Minimum of seven years of experience in designing and delivering union skills education and training programs.
• Demonstrated evidence of a passion for the value of learning and training in achieving strategic goals.
• Demonstrated understanding of the importance of rank and file organizing and leadership development as it relates to building collective power.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully manage planning and implementation of, and logistics for, many and varied training venues and conferences.
• Willingness and ability to work long hours, nights and weekends, and to travel statewide and sometimes nationally, as required.
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
