The External Organizer, under the leadership of a Director or equivalent supervisor, advances new organizing campaigns by organizing working people to fight for better lives for themselves and their families, identifying, recruiting, and developing worker activists and leaders to build and win their union.

Positions are available based out of both the Chicago headquarters of the union and in our Springfield, Illinois office.

DUTIES

  • Motivates non-union workers to organize through broad and intensive outreach efforts
  • Visits workers at worksites and homes.
  • Builds one-on-one relationships with workers.
  • Identifies, recruits and develops worker leaders.
  • Plans and facilitates group meetings with workers to advance organizing campaigns.
  • Inspires and mobilizes workers to take action to build power in their workplaces.
  • Participates, individually and as a team with other staff, under direction, to set goals, create plans to meet those goals and ensure accountability to those plans to meet campaign goals and timeline.
  • Engages Executive Board members and worksite leaders in the Local’s external organizing program.
  • Participates in Local-wide mobilization efforts and political and policy campaigns, new member events, unit meetings, leadership conferences and other multi-team activities.
  • Provides effective feedback that assists the further development of Local strategy and implementation.
  • Maintains complete, accurate and well-organized files and official records for inclusion in the membership database.
  • Other duties as assigned and directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least one year of advocacy and/or organizing work.
  • College degree or equivalent life experience.
  • Current valid driver’s license, working automobile and valid auto insurance, cell phone.
  • Willingness to travel, occasionally for extended periods of time.
  • Basic computer skills, with experience in organizing database systems preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays based on campaign needs.
  • Motivated self-starter and team player.
  • Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU Local 73.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary for the position begins at $46,745 and includes a $550 per month car allowance, paid holidays and vacations, fully paid health benefits, and a defined benefit pension plan fully paid by the employer.
