Based in New Brunswick, NJ

Two Organizer positions available at progressive higher education union at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Job Description:
Two full-time Organizer positions are now available working with the faculty and graduate worker union, Rutgers AAUP-AFT, at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The Organizer position is responsible for a variety of organizing tasks including but not limited to increasing membership, building relationships with workers, assessing workers, building lists, identifying and developing workers as leaders on their campus and departments, strategizing with AAUP-AFT leadership, as well as planning and executing events and Union actions.

Rutgers AAUP-AFT is actively working toward a more diverse and inclusive staff. You would join a collaborative team of hard-working self-starters at a politically progressive local that takes social justice demands seriously and member-led unionism as a guiding principle. These are union-represented positions with negotiated minimum salaries (currently $48,915) as well as generous health and retirement benefits. Starting salaries commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:

  • Have strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from Union leadership.
  • Conducts one-on-one organizing through meetings and home visits to accurately assess and recruit supporters and leaders.
  • Experienced in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus.
  • Being a skilled and experienced organizer, ideally with 2-3 years of organizing experience in the labor movement, particularly in higher education is desirable.
  • Be willing to work long hours during critical times.
