SEIU Local 925

SEIU Local 925

Political Organizer

Based in Seattle, WA

Looking ahead to 2020, the stakes and opportunities are clear. SEIU 925 is looking for a Political Organizer who will work with members to win for working families, whether white, black, or brown. Are you that person?

About us:
The Service Employees International Union Local 925 (SEIU 925), is 17,000 working people united to improve our jobs and our communities. We are education workers and public sector workers across Washington state. We are childcare providers, K-12 classified staff, higher education workers, adjunct professors, public defenders and many other jobs.

We are building a state that puts children and working families before big corporations and the rich and ensures that our education system is fully funded, birth through graduation.

About the position:
SEIU Local 925 is looking for an ambitious and collaborative Political Organizer. The Political Organizer is a key member of a small but mighty political and communications team that builds member power through lobbying, legislative action, issues, and elections. The successful candidate will be someone who is hard-working, creative, data-driven, and unafraid to take risks and try new tactics in a supportive environment.

Under direction of the Political Director, the Political Organizer will develop annual, monthly, and project-based political program plans in the following areas:

  1. Develop and grow member leaders through political work
    • Organize and coach members to engage and lead their fellow union members.
    • Seek out campaigns and issues that engage the full diversity of our membership, and develop workplans that specifically engage members who are immigrants, refugees, and members of the Rising American Electorate.
    • Serve as principal staff to local union endorsements. Develop endorsement training, work with Political Director to develop questionnaires and interview questions, and staff endorsement committee of members.
    • Participate in and lead member political and activist training programs.
    • Spearhead grassroots lobbying program: work with political staff and members to develop member lobbying skills and relationships at the local, state, and congressional level.
    • Create individual member development plans to further leadership development, including recruiting and preparing members to run for local office.
  2. Support member-led electoral organizing
    • With the Political Director and other SEIU WA State Council locals, help design election campaign plans for issues, candidates, and independent expenditure campaigns.
    • Organize membership mobilization for political action campaigns, including field work on doors and phones, innovative voter contact experiments, and earned media activities.
    • Serve as the local union’s “eyes and ears,” tracking political information on Congressional, state, and local races and ballot initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain data systems to track all member political activities.
  3. Represent Local 925 with community partners and allies
    • Lead and maintain relationships with community allies, partner organizations and labor coalitions on issue and electoral campaigns.
  4. Many other duties as assigned

Desired experience:

  • At least two years of political, community, or union organizing with demonstrated increasing responsibility
  • Committed to developing leaders and using grassroots organizing to win electoral and issue campaigns
  • Able to manage multiple competing priorities at once and prioritize appropriately
  • Organized, data-driven, and technology-friendly
  • Creative and unafraid to take risks in a supportive environment
  • Possession of a car and valid driver’s license required; this position will call for night and weekend work, travel throughout the state, and may require extended out of state travel.
  • A strong personal commitment to racial equity is required; experience applying a racial equity lens to campaign development is desired.
  • Experience working alongside communities of color and/or immigrant and refugee communities strongly preferred, as is fluency in a second language.
  • Past experience in political communications or a strong demonstrated interest in developing communications skills strongly desired.
