The Position
As member of the Center for Science and Democracy (the Center) team, the Organizer will design and implement engagement opportunities for scientists, activists, and partners to protect science-based health and environmental safeguards, deploy science as a tool to address inequities in public health and safety, and defend science from attacks and political interference. To do that, the organizer will recruit, cultivate, and mobilize the UCS Science Network– a national community of thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, public health specialists, and other experts who share the desire to put their knowledge to work in protecting our health, safety, and environment. They will offer educational resources, create engagement opportunities, and develop leadership among Network members to strengthen their skills and impact as advocates.

Now more than ever, we need this community to stand up for science and to defend health, safety, and environmental safeguards from politically-motivated attacks. Help further the Center’s vision to advance the role of science for a just, functioning democracy and evidence-based policymaking in service of public good.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate educational opportunities and opportunities for scientists to guard against attacks on science, defend public protections, and push for science-based solutions to public safety challenges such as poor air quality, unsafe water, or chemical safety risks.
• Develop resources and organize trainings and peer-learning opportunities for scientists to strengthen their skills and deepen their involvement as advocates.
• Help scientists craft communications that showcase the real-word value of science in policymaking and the unique role for scientists as informers, partners, and advocates.
• Identify and cultivate scientists seeking to grow as local leaders, who, in turn, offer opportunities for peers to join.
• Help foster and maintenance partnerships with science advocacy networks for resource-sharing and collaboration.
• Create opportunities for scientists and supporters to connect, learn, and take action together.
• Lead educational and action opportunities for UCS supporters to advocate for state and local efforts to increase voting rights, with a focus on supporting environmental justice communities most targeted by voter suppression policies.
• Offer educational tools and opportunities for UCS supporters to strengthen their role as inclusive advocates working towards equitable, evidence-based decision-making.
• Support other efforts of the UCS Center for Science and Democracy.

Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will be a strong community organizer comfortable working with experts and people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Experience and skills in leadership development, volunteer management, and advocacy trainings is required. Demonstrated competency in outreach/organizing on the regional and/or national level and legislative and media strategy is required. Demonstrated understanding and commitment for equity and inclusion is necessary; experience in equity- and justice-based organizing is preferred. The ability to work independently, balance a multitude of tasks, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team is essential.

Work requires two to five years of relevant and comparable experience in an outreach, organizing, campaign, or advocacy position, preferably in a non-profit environment. Position prefers a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field. Applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to conceive, plan, and implement effective outreach campaigns and engagement strategies. Strong written and oral communication skills, are necessary, as are strong skills in internet-related communications, including the presentation of and analyzing information on the web, database software, and word processing. Successful candidates will be able to articulate a passion for promoting the role of science and scientists in public policy making.

May spend extended periods at computer. May occasionally lift boxes of materials (less than 70 lbs.). Significant travel (10 or more overnights per year) is required. Regular office hours.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Benefits
Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time two-year temporary position based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC office. Depending on candidate’s experience level, this position pays $41,000-52,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
