Communications Director
Based in Tallahassee, FL
The Communications Director reports directly to the President of the Florida AFL-CIO. The position is salaried, overtime exempt; Salary Range: $45,000-$50,000 based on qualifications and experience. Medical, dental, eye care; generous personal leave; retirement benefits. The position is based out of the Florida AFL-CIO office in Tallahassee, FL.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Work with the President and Director of Politics and Public Policy to lead the development, organization and implementation of the Florida AFL-CIO strategic communications plans and infrastructure.
- Manage, create, review, and write all publications disseminated by the organization.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the organization, as directed by the President.
- Maintain close relationships with statewide and local press and lead the planning and execution of major press events.
- Compile research, briefs, presentations for local and statewide issue, legislative and electoral campaigns.
- Work in cooperation with the national AFL-CIO Communications Department to plan state media events, press and digital campaigns.
- Work with vendors to create promotional print, digital, mail, and video content.
- Develop member storytelling for local and statewide campaigns.
- Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations.
- Present media and communications trainings for union members, Central Labor Councils, local unions, and allied organizations.
- Drafting and placement coordination of op-eds, letters to the editor and other earned media placements/features.
- Maintain and develop content for the organization’s website and blog.
- Leading in the development of and implementation of organizational and campaign email and texting campaigns.
- Leading the development and design of digital content and managing engagement across numerous social media channels.
- Serve as the point of contact for all staff computers, phones, and IT related issues for the organization.
- All other duties as assigned by the President.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Communications or another related field.
- 3-5 years of related work experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical skills;
- Understanding of labor campaign communications strategies;
- Designing and implementing digital and social media strategies;
- Knowledge of paid media strategy and experience creating effective paid media;
- Experience in framing messaging for specific audiences and creating materials for those audiences.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines;
- Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced, professional environment and have a professional demeanor.
- Able to demonstrate considerable knowledge of Florida legislative and electoral processes. Proficiency in the production of digital, print, and video materials.
- Experience working with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, WordPress, NGP VAN/LAN and Action Network
Preferred skills:
- Ability to speak and write Spanish.
