Business Agent / Internal Organizer

Based in the Georgia / Atlanta Metro Area

The SEIU – Workers United Southern Region is a growing, progressive union representing over 14,000 workers at industrial laundries, distribution centers, college food service, higher education, and other jobs in the South.

Business Agents/Internal Organizers are responsible for recruiting and developing strong leaders and building an organized, committed membership capable of fighting for justice and winning power in their workplaces, industries, and communities.
This position is for a Business Agent / Internal Organizer to work with locals primarily in Georgia (mainly in the Atlanta Metro area).

Responsibilities Include:

• Recruit, train, and develop members as officers, shop stewards, and activists.
• Build member committees capable of resolving workplace problems and mobilizing co-workers to action.
• Meet and communicate with members by conducting workplace visits and house calls.
• Investigate and resolve grievances while training members to do the same.
• Create and carry out internal organizing plans for multiple workplaces, with guidance from the District Manager.
• Prepare and assist locals with labor management meetings and collective bargaining process
• Promptly return phone calls from members.
• Maintain updated membership information in computer database.
• Assist with external organizing, political, and issue action campaigns as needed.
• Driving, travel, and irregular/extended hours.

Qualifications:

• Internal or External Union experience; ideally as a Union Organizer with experience in both Internal and External organizing, including making house calls, building member committees, and handling grievances.
• Ability to motivate and inspire working people to action.
• Basic knowledge of labor law and union organizing principles.
• Comfortable using computer to update membership databases, create leaflets, correspond with e-mail, and scanning documents.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits includes pension, medical, dental, and vision insurance.

Language: Bilingual Spanish & English is a plus.
