Reports To: Political Director

About Us:
The Service Employees International Union Local 925 (SEIU 925), is 17,000 working people united to improve our jobs and our communities. We are education workers from early learning to K-12 through higher education, as well as non-profit and local government workers. We are clerical, computer and lab techs, food service, custodial, transportation, child care workers, adjunct professors, public defenders and many other jobs.

We are building a state that puts children and working families before big corporations and the rich and ensures that our education system is fully funded, birth through graduation.

Purpose: To carry out organizing, to take responsibility for major campaigns, to identify and develop worker leaders, to perform worker and staff training, and to design and implement organizing which meets the goals of Local 925.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Organizer performs a wide range of duties, which may vary
according to location, as well as the duties listed below.

  • Design, manage, and organize large organizing campaigns that bring workers from diverse communities, backgrounds and work places into a union.
  • Develop and conduct programs related to organizing, for example, GOTV or literature
  • for large Campaigns, or state-wide multi-unit projects.
  • Recruiting and developing an Organizing Committee of members that are representative of the workforce or workplace.
  • Identify, assess, and recommend organizing targets and apply a racial equity lens.
  • Community support work related to an organizing campaign.
  • Strike support work, including member actions, pressure on employers, and community
  • support.
  • Ability to take complex topics and apply them to a specific workforce and community.
  • Ability to maintain and update unit lists in a database.
  • Work closely in a diverse team on multiple campaigns
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to exercise high level of judgment
  • Ability to work well with diverse people
  • Ability to supervise, train and evaluate other staff
  • Fluency in Spanish, especially, or languages other than English preferred
  • Possession of a car and valid driver’s license required; this position will call for night and weekend work, travel throughout the state.
  • A strong personal commitment to racial equity is required.
