Description:
Nevada Faculty Alliance is a higher education professional association affiliated with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), with chapters at eight public colleges and universities in the Nevada System of Higher Education, three with collective bargaining. Currently, the Southern Nevada chapters have nearly 400 members. The goal of this 8-month, renewable position is to increase membership at NFA’s Las Vegas area institutions and to help spearhead a collective bargaining campaign leading to unionization of a fourth NFA chapter.

Purpose:
The Organizer is responsible for recruiting new members among eligible academic faculty employed at UNLV, Nevada State College, and the multi-campus College of Southern Nevada. The Organizer conducts office visits and follow-up with prospective faculty members; works with current member-leaders to create and/or support organizing teams at these chapters; and maintains records to facilitate assessment of contacts’ attitudes towards membership and potential collective bargaining.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Organizer must develop, schedule, and carry out plans with minimum supervision. He or she must receive direction from and cooperate with his or her immediate supervisor (State NFA President).

Criteria for Evaluation:

  • Maintains good working relations with the executive board, chapter leaders, and members
  • Carries out assigned responsibilities in a competent, professional manner
  • Produces measurable results in membership growth
  • Presents a positive image of NFA to Southern Nevada’s higher education community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to social justice and union/community organizing
  • Effective communication and record-keeping skills
  • A reliable vehicle that can be used for work, a valid driver’s license, and current automobile insurance
  • Three years of college (Bachelors degree preferred)
  • Two years of union, community organizing, or sales experience (3 years of such work history preferred)

Salary and Benefits:

  • $5000/month with individual health benefits
