SEIU Local 503 is looking for an Insurance Specialist to work with the Union’s Member and Staff Benefits programs within our HR Team. This position is currently a 6-12 month limited duration position with the possibility of extension and or permanent status.

Duties include the following:

  • Primary on answering telephone inquiries, provide members with information about Membership Advantages, insurance coverage, eligibility, enrollment, and process telephone premium payments.
  • Process new insurance applications. Mail insurance certificates and identification cards to insured members Cancel policies due to lack of premium payment, termination, or loss of eligibility including letters to members. Process life and disability insurance claims. Data entry of enrollment, changes or cancellations into the member data base.
  • Backup to process of depositing benefit premium payments from members and payroll offices in to the benefit checking account. Maintain records of insurance premiums received from payroll deduction and self-pay. Including payment data entry. Keep accurate records of eligibility for each insured. Advise payroll contacts on eligibility, premium administration, and other insurance determinations.
  • Assist with claims facilitation between insurance companies and members.
  • Maintain department filing, including scanning benefit documents into Document Locator application.
  • Assist with yearly open enrollment for union-sponsored insurance and Membership Advantages programs, including updating brochures, enrollment forms, member communications, and order enrollment materials needed for open enrollment as well as new members.
  • Compose and type correspondence, reports and other material using word processing and spreadsheets. Respond to requests for benefit information. Attend and present Membership Advantages program at union events, benefit fairs, local meetings, and new member/employee orientation.
  • Maintain supplies for all union sponsored plans including membership benefits.

Political Action: door-to-door canvassing, phone banks, issue campaigns, candidate campaigns, informing the membership on the issues and candidates, targeting candidates, targeting precincts for candidate races, voter registration, questionnaires and surveys on candidates and issues; get-out-the-vote drives.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma; three to four years previous clerical experience; accurate typing skills over 50 wpm; good English grammar and spelling skills; good public relations skills including ability to work with employees who may find themselves in stressful situations related to their insurance needs; requires pleasant, patient and calm manner for challenging phone callers or face-to-face member contact; requires the ability to do casework and be a liaison for employees with insurance carriers; requires two years previous insurance, medical or human resources employment; requires clerical and accounting skills; requires ability to work well in a “team” environment; requires ability to work well under pressure.

Compensation range is based on experience and is $2764-4029 monthly.
