SEIU Local 503, Oregon: Now Hiring Political and Electoral Strategist (Revenue Focus)

SEIU 503 is a union of 65,000 public workers, care providers, and non-profit employees in Oregon. We envision a just and vibrant society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where all workers can provide for themselves and their families.

Purpose of This Position:

  • Design and lead electoral campaigns both internally and externally and support our lobby team by leading on key policy issues. These campaigns will be cross-departmental (internal, external, political, communications, and research).
  • Responsible for leading externally on ballot measure campaigns, candidate campaigns, and issues campaigns. Lead with other organizations, members, candidates, and current elected officials.
  • Help develop and lead on revenue policy, lead with Revenue coalitions, and work to develop revenue campaign internally and externally.
  • Develop, analyze, and research public policy.
  • Represent the union in community coalitions around these campaigns and strengthen these relationships.
  • Engage members and non-members in our electoral program and work with external and internal organizers to engage them in the development and execution of the campaign.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting in development of the union’s political program;
  • Developing and writing campaign plans for candidates and ballot measures;
  • Working one-on-one with candidates to have them understand SEIU priorities and vision and to ensure that endorsed candidates are running strong campaigns;
  • Work with our member endorsement process and work with sister locals to create the process;
  • Lobbying elected officials and crafting policy as needed for key policy campaigns;
  • Tracking, developing and leading on revenue policy;
  • Working with the different revenue coalitions;
  • Working with coalition partners, and other groups to move forward our endorsed candidates and/or ballot measures;
  • Lead with campaign consultants to ensure that campaigns and/or ballot measures have a winning plan;
  • Leading with different SEIU departments on campaigns and the staff and member involvement in campaigns, especially revenue campaigns;
  • Collaborating with the political director and other program/department directors to develop policy initiatives;
  • Leading multi-departmental strategic campaigns;
  • Leading a team that works to implement the plans and strategic campaigns.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience leading and running electoral campaigns, candidates and/or ballot measures
  • Experience managing relationships with consultants
  • Experience lobbying and creating and evaluating policy
  • Experience leading other staff
  • Experience with polling
  • Experience working with coalitions and working to mobilize the community in campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of personalities and organizations and under pressure. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and carry it through to conclusion without close supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with political campaigns and provide expertise on message and field in campaigns.
  • Possess an understanding of the political structure and process.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills. Speaking experience before large and small groups.
  • Capable of using computer and various software packages.
  • Ability and stamina to work irregular and long hours and attend weekend and evening activities.

Travel Requirements and Working Hours:
Office and field work involving travel to all areas of the state – sometimes with overnight stays – in a variety of environmental conditions. Long hours required as political and union campaign seasons demand it.

Required Special Skills, Licenses, or Certificates:

  • Typing and writing capability, valid driver’s license.
  • Will be required to register with State of Oregon as Lobbyist.
  • Operation of Motor Vehicle is Required
