The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) is seeking a Director of Puerto Rico Campaigns to help develop, and coordinate local, state and federal campaigns and programs in the new and existing Puerto Rico Campaigns for transformational wins that address the root causes of the devastation in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria. Additionally, the Director of Puerto Rico Campaigns will work with CPD national staff, key allies and affiliates to create a political education and leadership development program to support to organizing the diaspora into a strong progressive force in the U.S. The Director will play a hands-on role working with CPD’s network of state-based partners across the country, as well as other allied state and national organizations, to develop ambitious strategies and build a robust program and campaigns.

About the Position
The ideal Director of Puerto Rico Campaigns candidate will have at least 5-8 years of relevant campaign experience working in the Puerto Rican community and grassroots organizations with experience in building and driving large-scale campaigns at the federal, regional/state, and/or municipal level. They will be rooted in the deep political history and context of the impact of colonization on Puerto Rico’s current political climate and have a deep commitment to building progressive political power for the people both in Puerto Rico and in the U.S. Diaspora. They will have experience leading both campaigns and large-scale direct action mobilizations, experience developing popular education curricula, building a scaled civic engagement project, and developing and training organizers rooted in the cultural context of Puerto Rico.

Job Responsibilities
The Director of Puerto Rico Campaigns will:

  • Coordinate CPD’s support to state and local organizations working on a range of issues relevant to the new and existing Puerto Rican diaspora.
  • Work in coalition with national allies and partners on Federal policy and national campaign strategy, driving planning on national days of action and coordinated mass mobilizations.
  • Coordinate an internal cross-departmental team that includes staff from other campaigns and support teams.
  • Build a large-scale direct action and community organizing effort to engage and mobilize Hurricane Maria refugees and the existing Puerto Rican diaspora and allies.
  • Create an extensive popular education program to build political consciousness on the corporate and colonial interests at play in the current financial and political climate of Puerto Rico.
  • Build a scaled civic engagement project.
  • Establish an identity-specific organizing training program to develop leaders in the diaspora and connect closely with ongoing organizing efforts in Puerto Rico.
  • Lead fundraising to grow CPD’s work on these issues, and to raise resources for our partners’ driving campaigns in the field.

Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with excellent relationship-building skills, who are outcome driven, with strong and diverse writing skills and project management skills. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following:

  • A strong commitment to social justice and an understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families;
  • 5-8 years strategic campaign and organizing experience in the Puerto Rican community;
  • A strong analysis of the history of Puerto Rican activism and root causes of Puerto Rico’s current political and financial crisis;
  • Experience in developing popular education trainings and workshops;
  • A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders and building healthy coalitions;
  • Experience managing multiple projects and ability to coordinate with multiple partners on campaign work;
  • Strong writing and fundraising skills.
