Legislative Coordinator

Based in Sacramento, CA

The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) is searching for a talented, hard-working individual committed to building a powerful and democratic union. The Legislative Coordinator will be values-driven, self-motivated and resourceful, with the skills, experience, and enthusiasm to lead the Union’s legislative program in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., and support its legislative work throughout California.

Duties
The Legislative Coordinator’s responsibilities include but are not be limited to:

  • Along with the President and Political Director, serves as a contact between the Union and state elected officials and staff in Sacramento, federal elected officials and staff in Washington, D.C., and state and federal agency personnel.
  • Acts as the primary contact between the Union and relevant staff leaders of other unions and allied groups to coordinate the Union’s involvement in state and federal policy and legislative coalitions.
  • Develops the state and federal legislative agenda in support of the Union’s organizing and bargaining efforts, and, in conjunction with the Political Director, organizes the statewide coalitions and actions necessary to support it.
  • Monitors state and federal public policy developments and develops legislative responses as needed.
  • Supports the direct and grassroots lobbying work of other staff and rank-and-file leaders, working with them to develop and provide necessary educational materials, training, and logistical support.
  • Represents the Union in statewide coalitions around health care, workers’ rights, and other issues.
  • Assembles legislative scorecards and other information on legislators’ performance for purposes of member education; helps to prepare endorsement questionnaires and lead endorsement interviews.
  • Helps create materials and execute staff and rank-and-file training as may be necessary to support meeting the political fundraising goals of the Union’s Committee on Political Education (COPE).

The Legislative Coordinator will execute these responsibilities in day-to-day collaboration with the Union’s senior contract lobbyist and legislative consultant, who add high-level strategic support and relationships.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to relate successfully to individuals of all races, nationalities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, income levels, educational backgrounds, and health care occupational groups.
  • Five years or more successful prior experience as a legislative lobbyist, legislative staffer, or elected official, preferably with experience in grassroots lobbying, coalition building, and electoral work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work long hours, independently, under stress and tight timelines.
  • Prior union experience and a basic knowledge of health care policy and public finance are preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish as well as English is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and use of the Internet.
  • Must have a car, driver’s license, adequate auto insurance, and a cell phone with email capability.

Compensation: Starting salary of $99,445 plus $6,000 auto allowance, employer paid medical and dental benefits for employee and family; life insurance for employee; holidays, sick leave, vacation; HRA and FSA plans; 401(k) with 14% employer contribution.
