WHO WE ARE
The Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO is a federation of over 100 individual unions, representing almost 200,000 working men and women in Philadelphia. The AFL-CIO represents workers in every sector from educators to welders, refinery workers to federal employees.

WHAT WE ARE SEEKING
The Labor Liaison is responsible for facilitating and managing a positive collaborative relationship between United Way and the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO and any/all union partnerships. The liaison supports activities, community relationships, fundraising, and outreach programs that reflect the shared priorities of these organizations.

The successful completion of the tasks and responsibilities of this position will result in increased exposure and member involvement between organized labor and United Way; increased civic (volunteer) participation and fundraising contributions by union members in United Way. It will also allow for increased visibility for the partnership between the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO and United Way and with other union affiliates as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The position’s essential functions include (1) ensuring an increased labor presence at events and activities sponsored by United Way that are directly connected to United Way’s mission; (2) lead and support efforts to involve organized labor in specific giving (fundraising) activities and (3) the liaison will build, maintain and manage relationships with union leadership, constituents and key community partners and complete other administrative duties:

  1. Lead and manage mission aligned signature or volunteer events
    • Manage and execute volunteer engagement opportunities – from strategy, to planning, to implementation
    • Secure potential sponsorship opportunities and media coverage (with assistance from the Communications team) for such events, highlighting these partnerships for maximum visibility.
    • Develop and monitor relationship database, event management registration, and volunteer tracking.
    • Assure appropriate processes for follow-up for maintaining current relationships and developing new ones.
    • Assist and support other United Way engagement events as needed and directed.
  2. Lead and support efforts to involve organized labor in fundraising activities
    • Work in partnership with fundraising staff on a shared goal of $50,000 from union campaigns or other sources (i.e. in-kind donations/services such as individual giving)
  3. Build, maintain and manage relationships with union leadership, constituents and key community partners and complete other administrative duties
    • Represent and serve both parties on programs and projects such as the Dislocated Workers Program, PA Rapid Response Team, Youth Engagement (labor unions), and other mutually agreed upon BOD or Committee opportunities.
    • Associated or other administrative tasks as needed and assigned.

BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates required skills or experience on core competencies in accordance with the United Way Competency Framework.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years relevant work experience.
  • Proven ability to work in a participative and collaborative manner, and to interact well with a diverse range of people.
  • Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and to effectively manage, organize and prioritize projects and workload with attention to detail and strong follow-through.
  • Must be goal driven and have a high accountability for results.
  • Ability to influence and persuade key stakeholders, peers, and staff, should include a service orientation.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and function in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and presentation skills
  • Microsoft Office and relational database skills and experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license & insurance and/or reliable transportation required for out-of-office travel as required by the position.

DESIRED SPECIALZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Familiarity with the history and current priorities of organized labor preferably having worked directly with a union
  • Familiarity with the local non-profit human services community and passion for our mission.

Classification: Exempt; Salary Range: $45,000-$55,000 based on experience
